Question Journey keeps playing while drummer rushed to hospital

I have mixed feelings about this. Its wonderful the drum tech knows all the song and can sit in for replacement. But if the drummer is rushed to the hospital and they ask the crowd for prayers is it the right thing to do to continue the concert?

That’s a very good question. I suppose the request for prayers is what prompts this question. If they had said "we hope he gets well soon” that would mean he isn't in such bad shape so there’s nothing to regret if the show goes on. But if a serious situation becomes evident, it raises ethical questions.

I read here about a Mac show continued without Mick, can’t remember the details, but I guess he wasn’t that bad to ask for prayers. Anyway in both cases details and information can change everything. For example, if Mick or Castronovo told the band Don’t cancel the show, go on! Don’t stop because of me! who am I to judge them?

Of course the money is another issue. But I don’t think they just said I’m not going to lose money because he got sick! It’s more complicated than that. There are contract clauses and complications arising from breaches of contract. And it’s not just about the band’s money. Last week, Robbie Williams’ second show was cancelled, and people had traveled from Ecuador to Lima to see it. They announced a new date in december but no one is going to reimburse them for what those guys spent. And the fact that bands worry about not disappointing their audience is good for their image.

Another question: Eagles performed their first concert without Glenn 18 months after his passing. Was it wrong that the Rolling Stones performed without Charlie Watts only one month after he passed away?

I read once Don’t allow what is correct keep you from doing what is right. But to define what was right and what correct in a specific situation can be very complicated.

Not sure the scenarios you mention are quite the same. Mick was sick and throwing up and he was not rushed to the hospital. They only did GYOW and Songbird and called it quits. Mick was back with the band the next stop. One song with a drum tech is not the same as doing the rest of the set. If someone is rushed to the hospital it must be really serious.
Bands replace members that die all the time. Had the Stones played the same day Charlie died would be crazy. One month later to continue the tour is another thing.

Not really the same either but The Who did a tour just a year after Keith died. Several of their fans were killed in a stampede over a late sound check with open seating. Authorities never informed the band of the deaths. The band played and finished their set. Pete Townsend was furious the band was never informed of all of the tragedy because the band seemed heartless and they admitted they would have never played. It shows what a different world we were living in back in 1979. No cellphones with news updates and no 24 hour news coverage and no Twitter. Everyone would have known what happened and the show would never have happened.

The Who incident made me break out in a cold sweat during The Dance tour in West Palm Beach. Stevie came really late for sound check and there was a line of 20,000 fans in line and the soundcheck was as late as 6:30. The band was playing Dreams and I feared there would be a stampede to get in with fans thinking the concert started. I hate amphitheaters and outdoor concerts.

How did you know it was because Stevie arrived late?

It was reported in the Palm Beach Post the next day about the concert. Donald Trump was in the second row. Stevie showed up late at the soundcheck and was "fat and flat."
But I did not have to read that to know. Who does a soundcheck at 6:30 when fans are at the gate? The band stayed at the Breakers Hotel on Palm Beach. Maybe Stevie got too caught up with shopping on Worth Avenue.
I had a friend that worked at the Breakers Hotel and he said Mick or John checked into the hotel with the silliest names. Someone was "Corona Light".
Lindsey's guitar string broke during GYOW and cut his hand so bad he was taken to a local hospital and given 7 stiches after the show.

i could never be in a band because people arriving late and holding all the rest of us up would drive me insane. I'm too anal.

'corona light'

I have a tiny old snippet of an article where John and Chris had checked into their hotel under the name "P. Guinn." gee, what does that sound like? lol I think it was 77, too... you know.... when they were 'divorced'.

It no different than holding rehearsals late in the evening, to appease her, sleeping until 5pm, or whatever she does.
It's all about you, Stevie.... WE GET IT!
What a spoiled brat she is, and has always been.

These posts made me remember about some artist, probably Tom Skerrit or George Hamilton, can't remember well but what I'm pretty sure is where he said Elizabeth Taylor was always late for the shoots (filming a movie in the 80s). But she was so beautiful that no one ever got upset. Don't hate me, I’m not saying Stevie is just like la Taylor, it just reminded me of that.

Or maybe she actually believed she was as idolized as Elizabeth Taylor? I'm starting to think that sands of time comment in the Not Black thread about Norma Desmond actually makes sense.

Oh, she's President of her own fan club. That's what surrounding yourself with yes friends for almost half a century does to you.
