Exclamation Stand Back and Little Red Corvette

We know the story that supposedly Stevie wrote Stand Back on her wedding day when she heard Little Red Corvette on the radio in late January 1983. Stand Back was a late addition to The Wild Heart. What I did not realize is that both Little Red Corvette and Stand Back were in the top 40 together for a week or two. On June 18, 1983 Little Corvette fell to #26 while Stand Back was racing up the charts at #36. Pretty amazing for a song inspired by Little Red Corvette would also be in the top 40 with the song for at least a week.
Stevie attended Prince shows in late 1982 in Texas as the Mirage tour was ending. He performed Little Red Corvette at those shows. This is why I believe Stevie got so excited hearing it on the radio. The way Prince did the song on that tour sounds much more like Stand Back than the studio version.
Pretty rare event. I doubt there is another song that was inspired by another song to be in the top 40 at the same time for at least one week.

Just another bit of useless information from the 1980s

There’s a 1985 performance in Prince’s official YouTube, and it didn’t remind me of Stand Back.
But this 1983 video does. I guess it is like the one you mean?

Yes that is the one that I mean. I dont really hear that much Stand Back on the studio version but the 1982/1983 live version does. Stevie was backstage at at least one of these Prince shows in Texas just months before she got married. So she heard the live version before the radio version. Its weird that Prince did not want credit but accepted royalties from the song. In any event these songs whizzed passed each other in early summer 1983.

The intro chords are the same, but Stevie takes them to a different place.

If Prince deserves a writing credit or publishing royalties due to the similar intro, then Stevie deserves as much on Jackson Browne's "Black And White," which lifts the intro to "Wild Heart" even more closely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CuAQOagYeY

He may not have deserved royalties but Stevie offered and he took them yet he wanted no credit. IMHO he should have been given credit for the part he played and with a slight new arrangement.
When the same musicians play I suppose no one is copying anyone. In 1982 Jimmy Iovine produced Bob Segar's The Distance which used most of the same musicians he brought to The Wild Heart. The song Even Now is almost a carbon copy of Enchanted. In fact when I hear Even Now on the radio, I sing Enchanted over it. The title each has the same syllables and the both begin with "E." Russell and Roy and everyone else cut the track first for Bob and then a few months later did Stevie. Before The Distance was released there was a release party where Jimmy and Stevie went and they thought Even Now should be the lead single. The record company picked Shame On The Moon as the lead single and Even Now was a top 12 follow up single. This is why I believe Enchanted was never released as a single since its basically the same track as Even Now even the ending is identical. I never could sing Stand Back to Little Red Corvette but I can easily sing Enchanted to Even Now.

Mmmm... ok not bad at all, since I love those versus/mashups, as long as they hit the mark. But to me the best was Blondie vs Doors.

I see the Bob Seger song came out first. Do we know whether he heard "Enchanted" before writing or recording his song, or whether Stevie heard "Even Now" before writing or recording hers?

The Distance was released in late 1982. Each song was written at different times. But the music track is extremely similar with the same musicians and same producer. Stevie definitely heard Even Now during The Distance album pre-release party where she attended with Jimmy. Everyone gave their opinion what the first single should be and supposedly both Jimmy and Stevie said Even Now but the record company had different feelings and released a ballad which was risky. But that risk paid off because Shame At The Moon went to #2 (I believe). Its possible Stevie wanted an Even Now sounding track on Wild Heart but I think the same musicians playing in the studio about 4 months apart tend to recycle stuff. But that part is just my opinion. Jimmy would know for sure.

Besides sharing the same producer, The Distance and The Wild Heart share lots of similarities

Both albums peaked at #5 on Billboard
Both albums had 2 big top 40 hits with each getting one top 5 song and another top 15 song, each also had a 3rd single that did crack the top 40 but barely.
Both album names begin with the word "The"
Both albums used mostly the same musicians Bobbye Hall, Waddy Wachtel, Russ Kunkel, Roy Bittan, Don Felder, etc
Both albums engineered by Shelly Yakus

Yes I always knew Stevie wrote Stand Back inspired in a Prince song, the wedding day, the royalties story, etc. But now I'm reading it was a friend who wrote the song? Or am I misundestanding the paragraph at this article? She meant Sandy? Or again... does her memories blend and blur together like carrots and tomatoes in the blender?

In December of 1983, Nicks performed two tracks from her sophomore solo album: "Stand Back" and "Night Bird."

"You know, we practiced and practiced, and everything went well. At the time, I had my friend who wrote 'Stand Back,' and she was gonna do the second song, which was called 'Nightbird' — and she freaked out and had terrible stage fright, so she couldn't do it," Nicks says.

The answer was in the comments. This is cut and pasted:

She's talking about singer and songwriter Sandy Stewart. Sandy co-wrote "If Anyone Falls" and a few others on "The Wild Heart"; but not "Stand BacK". She did play the keys on Stand Back. More so than Prince on the track. She also wrote most of Fleetwood Mac's "Seven Wonders" a few years later. Sandy ended up released two album of her own in 1984 and 1987. She also wrote or co-wrote songs Belinda Carlisle, Tina Turner & Fiona Flanagan have recorded. :-)

Sandy was all over The Wild Heart from the basic piano on the title track to the dreaded Nightbird keyboard intro. She was also played on If Anyone Falls and vocally on Nightbird. Stevie has always maintained she wrote Stand Back and is the exclusive writer on the credits. She has always given details of how the song was written the day of her wedding.

In that case Lindsey deserves a co-write for her writing the Wild Heart literally to his track for Can't Go Back.

And the Police should get credit on Edge of Seventeen.

LOL. Sandy wrote Seven Wonders. All of it.

Stevie flubbed like a COUPLE OF WORDS.....something like "all the way down to emmeline" which was written by Sandy as "all the way down the line" or something and then Stevie in her imperious coke days had her team demand that she get songwriting credit (to help Stevie save face by making it seemed she was still writing new songs). Sandy's version of the story was that she knew she was getting screwed to give away part of the royalties but her manager and others said to her "even 75% of a hit by FM will bring you more money than 100% royalties if you record it and release it". So she went along. Money talks.

Stevie liked the song and during Bella Donna kept telling Waddy what to do. Waddy had never heard the Police's song and was very upset after Edge of 17 was released because it looked like he purposely ripped off the Police. Stevie wanted that sound but would never tell Waddy she was ripping off the Police. Waddy was very upset and told Stevie to never do that again. This is why for Stand Back she called Prince and told him she was ripping him off but gave him half the royalties.

There was also that episode a few years later when she "lifted" one of Tom Petty's demo tapes and wanted to use one of the instrumental tracks, I think of Runaway Trains.

She was on a roll there for a while lol....
