Here is a wild fact. A famous songwriter offered A Total Eclipse of the Heart and Making Love Out of Nothing At All to Meatloaf who declined both songs
Air Supply took Making Love and it went to #2 only to be blocked by #1 Total Eclipse of The Heart by Bonnie Tyler who graciously accepted the song.

Who remembers Jackson Browne's Lawyers in Love? A top 10 hit that you never hear today. They called it the preppy song because early 80s was the preppy years.
"Eating on TV trays watching Happy Days" - a great line in the song
"The Russians escaped when we were not watching as Russians do. I heard the USSR will open up as vacation land for Lawyers in Love"

Men At Work's It's A Mistake is their best song IMHO. Never realized but its about nuclear war and a general launching war "its a mistake"

That reminds me Molly Ringwald turned down Pretty Woman and Michelle Pfeiffer Silence of the Lambs. Of course it is unpredictable how succesful would have been those movies with those actresses. But I bet Bonnie's version is better than the one Meat Loaf would have sung.

Back to unexpected, the scene of the glances between L&S in The Dance Silver Springs has been popping up on my Instagram all the time since yesterday.

Yes so strange Molly turned down Pretty Woman because she did not want to play a prostitute. It was a funny call girl not a real bad slutty one. Yet she made Pretty In Pink which was horrible. I just saw an interview that Anthony Michael Hall turned down Pretty In Pink because he thought it was a rehash of 16 Candles. He also turned down the lead role in Ferris Buellers Day Off. He said Director John Hughs was so angry he sort of ended their friendship and he was never asked to do a movie again.

A few days late but September 4 marked 50 years that Fleetwood Mac (album) hit #1 for one week over a year after its release. The summer had the Mac opening for the Eagles in stadiums. Both bands were on the edge of history. Hotel California and Rumours were just half a year away. Christine remarked that she needed to up her game with songwriting because of the stuff Stevie and Lindsey brought to the band. She wrote Over My Head and Warm Ways at her Malibu apartment. Sugar Daddy was not about anyone but someone she dreamed up. Blue Letter was remixed for a possible single but was slapped on the B side instead. I love the remix versions of the singles. Lindsey's guitar licks really pack a punch into the songs. Sadly we only hear the album versions anymore.

Single versions of SYLM, Rhiannon and OMH were included in the Expanded release. But probably there were more mixes and early version I'd love to hear (though there are some in the Deluxe release). Mick quoted Paul Ahearn (promo man to help break Fleetwood Mac on the radio):

Paul Ahearn: "The big thing was, they didn't have a single. I put them together with Deke Richards, who had produced most of the early hits by Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five. They remixed 'Over My Head' so it would sound good on a car radio, and FM stations started picking it up right away."

The new version of "Over My Head" was very "highend," with a new guitar intro and different vocal harmonies. It was a hotter mix that sounded great on a car radio, and it began to hit almost as soon as Warners released it in September. But not without some resistance. Back then American radio was much more polarized into FM/good guys/albums versus AM/crass/singles. Whereas FM radio took to the single right away, AM was slow because commercial radio had the same expectations "just another Fleetwood Mac record" as the label. We would call stations and people would have us confused with Savoy Brown. But once we got going on the road, we had a big breakthrough every week, with some important station adding our record. The stations later saw local sales continuing strong and kept playing the record. That's how our momentum began to build. After only a month or so of this, we had sold 400,000 records.
