Once you start doing it you become obsessed with mentally planning your next hit. It never stops. Its and endless cycle and soon its the only thing that matters in your life. No physical addictions just a mental intense need and obsessiveness. Intense addicts go crazy not just because of the drug but the lack of sleep. Thats the same reason a meth head and crack head are crazy. Many of them have not had sleep in days. As Stevie said in Two Kinds of Love about Joe Walsh .....my third day up, his second nighter.
Stevie has said this too.

I think it's a crock of sh*t. It's total denial of how bad they were....by somehow saying they could have been "worse". Irrelevant. They did enough of all the drugs they DID do to finance the whole country of Columbia... and both he and Stevie almost killed themselves several times over. She went through professional rehab TWICE. (totally irrelevant that the second was due to prescription drugs. She was still an addict). He also had to struggle to get sober. And blew through his entire fortune. And slept on people's floors because he was so broke. And he wasn't there for his kids. But sure, if it makes you feel better that you didn't do heroin.......

Yes. And I always read "Everyone was doing it (coke) in the 70s, so we didn't think it was bad". Well if it is, was, illegal, don't tell me you didn't know there was more than something wrong with it. And if it kept you awake for 48 or 72 hours, come on we all have a minimum of common sense.

Now, statistically speaking, what Mick says does make sense. I couldn't find a comparison of mortality rates between the two drugs, but I did find a study conducted in Spain that concluded that a high percentage of heroin users also use cocaine. The mortality rate among those who use both drugs is 14.3 times higher than in the general population, while among those who only use cocaine it is 5.1 times higher.

Of course, in reality the issue is more complex than cold numbers, and each case is different, but I would bet that if they had also consumed heroin, it is very likely that their 80s music would not have existed. Band and solo.

I love to drink it. It's delicious, and healthy. Specially when I travel to high mountain regions, it helps to oxygenate the blood.

Remember the discussion many years ago about the Hold Me video and the director of the video came forward with how the band could not stand to be filmed together and how difficult it was working with the band. Was it not reported that someone tried to get Stevie to go to rehab or she did go but never stopped using blow right before Mirage was released. I cant remember if he said it delayed the shoot or not. That is my memory perhaps someone knows more. Stevie never talks about that attempt. She was already a dangerous addict but touring and sleeping with Joe Walsh in the summer of 1983 accelerated her addiction to the moon. If true, Stevie never talks about that attempt at rehab. Maybe she never went and was only an attempted intervention.
Her wake up call should have been visiting Prince at his house during the Wild Heart tour. He invited her to collaborate but she could not stop using drugs and passed out on his kitchen floor. But when you have fame, money , and a whole crew of YES people its impossible for the truth to hit you.

It is me, on the Inca trail. Though I confess that picture was few years ago.

A recent picture is this at the Sacred Valley, not as high as the trail, "just" 3800 mt above sea level. The coca infusion always welcome, as are the candies. I would have brought some for Mick as a gift, but all those (legal and healthy in Peru, not kidding) products are prohibited from entering the US.

Yes, I've done that when I did the Inca trail (a 3.5 days hiking), but not with the stone. Because some local people chew the leaves with a particular stone within the mouth. That stone is rich in lime (calcium oxide) that combined with the coca leaf it produces the alkaloid, and that is very similar to cocaine, with similar effect.

The pure leaf, chewed or drunk, is not the same as cocaine, nor its effects. That's why it is legal and considered healthy. When you arrive to Cusco, tourists are welcome at hotel with a cup of mate (tea) of coca, to comfort them by reducing the effects of altitude. However, despite not having the stimulating effects of the drug (it doesn't even have the sleep-reducing effect of coffee), it is forbidden to athletes cause the analysis may result positive. I'm not a chemistry expert so I don't know why.

I think it's just an observation that they would have been more likely to have died.
