Mick and Bob interview (1978)

I love this old interview although the interviewer is a bit of a ding bat. French Kiss was recently released and Mick and Bob are doing interviews promoting the album. Mick was managing Bob's career at this time. Bob was hanging out with the band and traveling with them on the Rumours tour at some shows. The band was supposed to be far more involved in French Kiss but their heavy touring in Europe limited their involvement. Bob a few times is subtle about his regrets leaving the band when they became superstars. But French Kiss was a huge success and got 3 top 40 singles peaking at #12. The interviewer calls Mick a great business man. Two words: Just wait.
Mick talks about preparing for a double album. He insists it will only be a double album without padding. Each song has to be really good.
The interviewer goes there and asks Bob if the band asked him to join again would he. He does not really say no but gives the political answer. Success made everyone happy. They were all on top of the world in 1978 including Bob Welch. Mick was managing the biggest band in the world at that time plus Bob. A very funny part of the interview was talking about "old" rock stars being in their 40s and touring. I think Bob even uses 50 as a hypothetical age rockers could keep going. Its funny to think but back then people in their 40s were really old and almost considered washed up rock stars. Today many bands are in their 70s and 80s.
Bob is asked why he left Fleetwood Mac and calls himself a fool. He thinks psychic probability happened and it had to happen for him to leave. But he does talk about what a horrible 1974 was with the lawsuit with the fake band. All they did for 9 months were lawyer visits and the band was going to need a record deal which was not certain at that time. Bob says that Heroes Are Hard To Find was well received but still it missed the mark that they were hoping for something bigger.

Funny indeed. When one is a teen, 10 years is a whole life. So teenage fans would surely see the 40+ rockers as dinosaurs. But Mick and Bob were 30 and 32. I don't think they honestly thought about retiring in 10 years.

In the 1982 CREEM magazine interview with Lindsey he is asked what the future held in his career. He said he no longer wanted to be on the road past 40
