Incorrect Officially Released Live Dates

I thought it would be great to have all (or the known) incorrect dates of the officially released live versions in one thread.

Gosh, I don’t know how we could fix everything. It’s really a lost cause at this point. I can start with the 1980 Live album by stating unequivocally that these performances are from the 1977 tour (including soundchecks):

• Say You Love Me
• Monday Morning
• Dreams
• Don’t Stop
• Rhiannon
• Over My Head

One song is from the 1975 tour:

• Don’t Let Me Down Again

As much attention as these get, I thought there would have been more (perhaps the live tracks on the box set re-releases have accurate dates).

Of the 1977 batch on Rumours Deluxe, I am not aware of any discrepancies with those four venues or the live dates on the earlier Rumours Extended. Same for the three or four venues represented on white album Deluxe. Those dates and locations were floating around in the ether for decades before those deluxe editions, anyway. (The Albatross But Not Around My Neck Please vinyl bootleg was usually advertised as Yale Coliseum in New Haven.)

The Live Deluxe third disk has an obvious mistake in the dating — for “The Chain.” It’s billed as a Cleveland 1980 performance, but it’s an Inglewood Forum (the alternative night from the one that’s on the new CD). So far, I have no reason to doubt the other venues on that disk. I can spot the performance differences between a “Tusk” from May 1980 and one from August 1980, and these dates all ring true. To me.

The Tusk Deluxe disks 4 and 5 venues and dates all seem plausible, although there’s a little confusion over whether certain cuts from St. Louis were Nov. 5 or 6. But “Say You Love Me,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon,” “Sara,” “Landslide,” “You Make Loving Fun,” “What Makes You Think You’re the One,” “World Turning,” “Go Your Own Way,” and “Sisters of the Moon” all seem correctly dated. You know you’re Tusk tour savvy if you can identify a June 1980 “World Turning” from an August 1980 “World Turning.” Comparing and contrasting the two can hone your expertise. It makes for a good tutorial.

Those same disks have cuts from no fewer than five different nights at Wembley, so we have no way of confirming the specific dates without audience recordings.

No clue about the accuracy of anything dated on the 1969–74 compilation.

For the latest batch from Inglewood 1982, it’s impossible for me to confirm it all. There were performances on the original video that I swore were from the first night because of faint memories I had, which have now been dated the second night, so I’m largely lost. For example, on the first night, Stevie did some dancing on “The Chain” with the cameraman right in back of her that I could swear she did not repeat on the second night — and the video captures it. Yet that cut is ID’d as Oct. 22. Another example: the higher, rather forced register on bridge to “Gypsy” (heard on the video) I could swear was the first night, and the different “Gypsy” on the new CD is labeled as second night — so that works, yay. Finally, I swear I remember hearing Lindsey say “Isn’t that a great song?” after “Hold Me” on the first night, not the second — and lo and behold that is correctly labeled on Live Deluxe.

This hurts my brain.

Well, sh|t, thanks! In the long run, I guess none of this stuff really matters, or matters as much as the sheer joy of getting these CDs to the public.

Yes, that's what really matters. However if the description says a song is from some date and one thinks it is a new one, and after buying and listening it, one realizes it was already released in a previous album with a different date, it's kind of dissapointing. But I don't think that happens in most cases.

The biggest (and to my ears only) difference with the new released version of "Gypsy" compared to the older ones is the missing #do do do do do doo# part, and that she sings #Lightning strikes# totally differently.

Lindsey saying "Isn't that a great song?" after "Hold me" is the only difference. To me, both versions sound exactly the same (I compared them by playing them simultaneously on my desktop).
Could be just an editing thing, although the usual FM sloppiness is present because the version on Live Deluxe appartently is from October 21, and the 'new' one is billed as from the 22nd...

She has a different arrangement for a brief time right after where the do do do do do do came. For me the biggest difference is the bridge. I like everything else better on this new release version of Gypsy except the bridge. On the HBO show she hits all the high notes with passion on the bridge. This one is still very good but does not have the passion from HBO. Also a few minor details is she changes her oooooooo's and oohhhhh's in different places on both nights.
But all similar for sure. I can lip sync every word and lyric from the HBO show since I was 13. What I love about this new release on a few songs is I am not an expert any more and there is a little uncertainty. For a band that keeps rehashing the same stuff over and over (9 or so deluxe releases of Rumours) this blows me away.

When they played the coliseum in Oakland, it was the night before this LA run, so you can hear obvious similarities but obvious differences, too (just based on human variability—nobody plays exactly the same guitar lick on successive nights).

The Oakland concert was famously audience taped by Jeff Samuels, a Bay Area Deadhead who was one of the first to use digital equipment. Jeff's recording went to Roland Benoit, and from there it entered the trading bloodstream. It's now on YouTube:
