In truth, PK live has fallen flat. But I wasn't terribly impressed with the live versions of SYW I've heard. Musically, PK is far more interesting. At least to my ear.

PK, esp. the first version with LB only, was one of the most musically superior things to me on SYW. I think he should do Murrow like he did at the PBS Sounstage thing. The song is perfect for La Nicks to chime in. But, I am afraid their performance will be rote, but at least we get to see them.

On a somewhat different note, am I the only one that thinks that Stevie is drowned out during the chorus of Say You Will (live versions from the tour, at least)? Whenever I listen to a bootleg of this song from the tour I can hear nothing but a couple of annoying backup singers and Stevie's voice is so faint. Is it supposed to be like this? I don't understand why they wouldn't want her to sing this part though.

Thrown Down will never happen. Deep down, I think we all know that. I really don't care to hear another live rendition of Peacekeeper, and I think they gave up on Say You Will. So, I think they should pull out a nostalgic oldie for New Year's Eve. I vote for anything except Dreams, Rhiannon, Big Love or Landslide.

I am pretty sure it was her choice to sing the power part because on the sniglets of video we saw on the fanclub site before the record was released, Stevie was telling LB he had to sing the high parts.

If "Taste is a matter of taste," then practice what you preach. I love both songs. I don't think one blows the other away. It's like comparing apples and oranges...like saying "Everybody finds out" blows "Steal Your heart away" out of the water or comparing "Miranda" to "thrown Down." It's all a matter of opinion.

I do practice what I preach. I said taste is a matter of taste, then I discussed the musicality angle. Like it or not, Peacekeeper musically is superior to Say You Will. And in fact, just about every Lindsey song in SYW is superior to Stevie's stuff. See, he actually is striking more than two notes vocally and coming up with some fairly compelling melodies.

If your thing is drone-like trance vocals a la Illume and Say You Will, that is a matter of taste. But that does not musically a better song make.

Carne - I agree Stevie's voice is limited by its own nature (perhaps self-imposed) in Illume. In fact and although I like the song, I will never get why she chose to sing it like that, when IMO she could have and should have branched out a little more. I think it would have made the IMO beautiful imagery of the song more compelling.

But, I submit the vocal on "Smile at You" is the superior vocal on the record from an academic standpoint (I am not discussing the relevance or quality of the song). In it, she goes into two octaves and nails it. Thrown Down probably is the second. Her voice literally floats in most of that song.

Nothing LB does on SYW approaches that vocally. Rather, LB's vocals are mostly heavily produced in that he likes to distort the human voice with a filter, etc. Not that there is anything wrong with that, in fact he is very clever and effective at doing it, esp. considering singing, although he certainly can sing, is not his strongest suit (no slam - even he admits Stevie's got a great voice). In fact, my only problem with that process is it can be difficult to reproduce live a la PK. But, anyone at the PBS Soundstage taping will readily tell you, although it was considerably pared down compared to the album cut, "Murrow" translated incredibly well. There just weren't 10 or so gimmicky vocal noises and words floating around like on the record.

You are speaking on a matter of opinion here, and calling it fact...saying a song is better is opinion, no matter how you say it. Who says that a great song has to have atleast two notes vocally? I mean really...and what you consider compelling melodies are not what everyone else does. I personally like the song Peacekeeper and I agree I would say it is musically a better song, but I don't think that's the case for all of Lindsey's songs on Say You Will. (Although I think Peacekeeper is rather boring live, and would much rather hear Say You Will live.)

Opinions are what make a song good to you..what YOU Like...and you can say there's a difference, but there is not. I don't think the guitar part in Peacekeeper is any more artistic than the guitar part in Say You Will..do you?

That's what has always bothered me about Say You Will: it seems to be sung in the wrong...tempo? key? I have no musical training, so I don't know the right words to use here, but to me the lyrics seem to want a more upbeat song. The lyrics are catchy, and I thing it could have been a very popular song, but something is just not quite right about it.

I'm not going to get into a "fight" here, and I'm going to preface my comments by again stating how much I love Lindsey's music, but, come on... how many fans and critics have noted the distinct similarities between many of Lindsey's 'SYW' tunes and those he's recorded before?
Even "Peacekeeper"... which is the song you're directly referring to here... has been "criticized" for a striking similarity to Paul Simon's "Kodachrome."

And just about every sonic trick he used on the production of this album, is something he's used on a previous recording.

Now, I should hope that Lindsey can come up with compelling instrumentation... after all, he's a playing musician and a seasoned producer... but to say his music is "superior" to Stevie's, or vice versa, is going some, and absolutely a matter of opinion.

I like this critique by Marcello Carlin... "If Stevie provides the emotional adventure, Lindsey provides the sonics."

To get back to the topic of the thread, I think "Say You Will" would be more fitting for a New Year's Eve special. The lyrics are hopeful and romantic, tempered by the wisdom of someone who's seen the good and bad aspects of love, and the chorus is exceedingly catchy. Not to mention that it's just plain fun.

Stevie does not "drone" or sing "two notes" on the album. Her voice is unique, sexy, myterious, raspy... and needless to say, I love it! Of course this is just my opinion.

Her voice is obviously not for everyone. In fact, everytime I pop in a Stevie record my sister chimes in with "Is that her real voice?"

And as another person mentioned, listen to Smile at You or Running through the Garden. Her vocals rock on those songs especially.

And from what I have heard this tour, Stevie's voice is "far superior" to Lindsey's, who appears to just scream out the lyrics. Of course, I can understand that because I am sure his guitar playing takes a lot out of him.

And Say You Will is not week lyricly if you ask me. I love it, it is so romantic and Lindsey's guitar solo just adds to the romance of that song. Almost as if no words need to be said. That little guitar solo is like the time when Stevie's old flame is supposed to think about getting back together with her and he is supposed to think about giving her "one more chance". So maybe that is why there is not a lot of lyrics in that song. Of course, this is just how I interpret SYW.

And I bet the band likes SYW better then Peacekeeper seeing how it is the title of the album.
