Default Stevie says at age 18 she had a record deal

https://www.today.com/popculture/mus...n002y4tI06KSOU

Quote from this article: Nicks says her Barbie reminds her of how she got into songwriting at 15 after a couple of months of guitar lessons. After writing “some good songs” between 16 and 18, she got a record deal with 20th Century Fox for five years.

This is the first time in my life I have ever heard this. Is this one of her history re-writes again?

So she had a record deal while she was in Fritz?

I also see that she plans to tour until she's 80. Thank you for sharing this article, viv!

IMHO she'll never stop touring and she'll never move to Scotland and she'll never release her poetry book. At least she's no longer claiming there will be a Rhiannon movie.

25+ year fan here and this is the first I've ever heard of her having a record deal between the ages of 16-18. There's the story about her and Jesse wanting to go on the road to do shows together as a country duo, but her family said she was too young. That's a far cry from a record deal.

If Lindsey ever does meet and greets again, I know what I'm asking about. I'm sure he would have heard/known about this at some point.

Her grandfather brought her to a saloon where she danced on tables one night when an Atlantic record executive was drinking. He saw her singing and approached her grandfather about a record deal. The deal was signed but fell apart because of the touring conflicted with her age getting into bars.
Several years later her parents bought her a guitar and she wrote a few songs with Robin one of them being California Dreaming. She was proud of it but felt it was not right for her and offered it up to the Mamas and the Papas. Later at school she met Lindsey and she taught him the chords and they performed together for the first time.

She's mentioned it in interviews before, but not often. Probably because it was a dead end, and probably because she felt she didn't earn it. Here, she's talks about it in 2011 to the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/music/20...dtrack-my-life

I figured it had something to do with her dad and his biz contacts or him buying her some sort of vanity deal. There it is.

The same year that she got her boobs.
You know what is funny about Stevie. She never takes responsibility or owns her decisions or behavior.
Speaking of the boobs. She said she was told she had to get them to make it in the business. She said the same thing about coke. She was told it would give her energy to work harder. About klonopin, a doctor wanted to be a groupie and kept prescribing it to her.
Imagine if she said something like. I wanted to make a statement and there were many sex symbols and decided to get breast implants. OR I liked to party and fell in love with cocaine. It was really fun for awhile. OR While tranquilizers helped me in the beginning, I substituted getting high for getting low.

There's something I never understood. Many people, not only Stevie said that in the 70s cocaine was usual, everybody consumed, practically they said they insinuated it wasn't harmful, it wasn't wrong. I heard arguments like that in Studio 54 & Fleetwood Mac documentaries, Elton John bio, etc, etc.

So, if it was so accepted, so normal, why didn't they sell it in drugstores? Or markets like liquor? Why was it already illegal?

It was another time before the war on drugs in 1984. The over indulgent 70s and early 80s had the evidence that no one could sustain that kind of life without serious consequences. Cocaine is a stimulant and it does increase your senses. Creative people are more creative. Drivers can drive better. However when you cant stop has the opposite effect. You are far less creative because your only focus is getting high. You cant drive as well because you are wired from not sleeping.
Don Henley described it perfectly. They were creative and then started cocaine and became more creative and sold more albums. Suddenly the false belief came if they did more cocaine it would make things even better. But then the floor drops out and it takes away all of your creativity. Stevie is a great example. Her solo career started off with a rocket. The years after its release she became more and more dependent on cocaine. Each album sold less and by 1985 she was only writing a fraction of the songs on her own album. I am not even mentioning what it did to her voice and her nose and body. All of her creative juices taking a backseat to cocaine.
She dont lie she dont lie she dont lie COCAINE

That's what still surprise me. That it was over indulgent in USA. It wasn't in Peru, I was a teen in the 80s and I do remember cocaine was forbidden, illegal, already known as very dangerous, etc. I thought in the US was similar, since I learned long ago, for example, that coke was eliminated from Coca Cola formula in 1929.

Just for general culture I comment that I can't bring coca leaves nor coca tea filter bags to the US in my baggage. I don't mean the cocaine drug, but the leaves, with which a delicious and healthy infusion is prepared. I enjoy drinking coca infusion (mate de coca), and it's beneficial specially when you go to upper lands in the mountains. It helps the blood to absorb oxygen so very conveniente at altitude. And there is no psycothropic, "high" effects at all. It's one of the few legal coca products in Peru.

Thanks, DashingDan. I’d never heard this before:

“When I was a senior in high school a friend of a friend of my dad was a big deal at 20th Century Fox. So I flew to LA, took my guitar, sang and signed a five-year contract with a producer named Jackie Mills. He quit soon after, and luckily there was a "main man" clause in my contract that meant I was now released from it. I wasn't upset. Even at that age I was smart enough to realise that I didn't want to be stuck on a label with people that I didn't know.”

Well I'll be damned. What an amazing memory Dan has. After you both read this I will delete the entire thread, if I am able to.
