Having read Warren Zanes's biography of Tom Petty, I know the (vulgar) line Duck Dunn uttered upon hearing the playback of the track (edited out here when Stan Lynch recounts it at 16:46). It's a funny remark.

Stan (third best drummer in the business) never talked much about Stevie, and what he did say wasn’t very approving. But the guy partied with her, whether he remembers or not. He attended those post-concert parties with Queen Stevie at the underground Supper Club at the Forum, and he partied with her gang at the Sunset Marquis (the “Imperial Hotel” of the song) in West LA. Of course, he could claim he had all this fun with Stevie only because his friend Benmont was there, too.

The fawning guy interviewing him was right to call attention to the great drumming on “Night Watchman” on Hard Promises. That is wicked. I sure wish Stan had stayed with Tom. (He was also the only drummer who knew how to play “Outside the Rain” the proper way.)

My favorite material from the Wildflowers deluxe box set were the tracks with Stan playing. That version of crawling back to you....killer!

I was very much surprised to see he played on that material. There is no mention of his playing on those sessions in Warren Zanes's Petty biography (for which Stan was interviewed), in the Runnin' Down A Dream documentary, or in the Somewhere You Feel Free documentary on Wildflowers and its then-newly released additional material. To the contrary, these sources make it seem as though Stan was completely out of the picture and was brought in special for the Greatest Hits sessions that resulted in "Mary Jane's Last Dance."

So did they start the album with a view to making a Heartbreakers album, fire Stan, and change the plan to a solo album? Alternatively, going in did Stan no more have the job than anyone else, and was just one of a number of drummers they tried (including Kenny Aronoff, who plays on "Drivin' Down To Georgia") before settling on Steve Ferrone?

From the Zanes book, it's clear Stan had been on his way out of the Heartbreakers since the fall of 1987, when he and Mike got into a quite heated argument and basically never spoke to one another again (or not until after Petty's passing). Tom just took a long time to pull the trigger (same with leaving his first wife, which happened around the same time). Petty had the same manager and, from 1978, even the same road manager his whole career. He was a loyal guy.

Also per the book, though the band got great drum parts from Stan, it took FOREVER to do so. He was not quick and easy the way I imagine Steve Ferrone is.
