I was at a client seminar sponsored by my firm. Kenny Loggins played. Third song in. He starts talking. He says - so in 1977 I opened for Fleetwood Mac. I met Stevie and she says to me - if you ever need a chick to sing with you, call me. So I had this song and Stevie ended up singing with me. He said - I never sing this song without giving a shout to Stevie because she jump started my career. It was a nice little shout out to her. And a great version of the song.

That's great that you got to see him like that. I agree, it's great that Kenny still gives Stevie some credit on that song. There's an article on the Nicks Fix that includes a few lines about her time with Kenny Loggins (she says this stuff in 1/2 jest).
http://rockalittle.com/hightimes3-82.htm HIGH TIMES: You did a duet with Kenny Loggins, "Whenever I Call You Friend." STEVIE NICKS: That was a discipline thing. I call him Slave-Driver Loggins. He cracked the whip on me for two days to get that particular performance. And I was downright angry at points where I was going, "I’m not going to do this." He said, "Yes, you are." He’s a real good producer, Kenny, he got exactly what he wanted. When it was done and I left, I was knocked out. I really had to keep my mouth shut and do what I was told. And it worked. He wasn’t interested in a dull vocal. I haven't ever seen a video of Stevie performing with Kenny Loggins live yet. I'm sure there's one out there somewhere |

I love that. Slave Driver. He did get what he wanted. A brilliant vocal from Stevie and a vocal only she could deliver. I love that song.

This is one of her best in my opinion, although I guess most of the credit goes to Kenny.
Her duets are all amazing, they're probably my favorite songs of her non-FM career. |

I wish Stevie would have given more vocals like this: powerful and brilliant! And, I wish this song got as much attention and airplay as a song I see as it's twin or parallel: Dont Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John & Kiki Dee.

He did list Stevie on the album, but not on the 45. Not sure what that was about.

If I remember correctly it had something to do with the two different record labels not coming to an agreement. Stevie sadly wasn't his first choice. Co-writer Melissa Manchester was supposed to be on the track but she was busy touring with Bette Midler and couldn't find the time to go to a studio and Kenny wouldn't wait. She recorded her own version a few years later in 1979 with session singer Arnold McCuller.

I love Melissa Manchester and her music. It would be a killer hit too if they done it together instead of Stevie.

But as to the credit issue and why Stevie wasn't listed on the single version, I have no idea about that. |
