I'm baffled that "All Over You" is still mistaken for a Stevie/Prince collaboration. The voices sound nothing like Stevie or Prince.

As a huge Prince fan, I own a book containing exhaustive records of Prince's recording sessions from his engineers in the 1980s, and there's no mention of this song among his outtakes/demos. I've never seen this song come up in discussions in Prince fan forums. I think most Prince fans would laugh at the idea this was the work of the Purple Yoda.

I think I'm going to post it on prince.org to see the reaction.

I hope whatever half-baked, would-be basement lounge act that recorded this appreciate the attention it's attracted for many many years.

Sorry if that sounds harsh. But I'm "All Over" it.

Knowing what Rhino has done in terms of reissues for other artists recently, I think we will see deluxe RAL and OSOTM sets coming.

As much as I would LOVE a remastered "Street Angel", I can't see that happening. It would be nice if Stevie released all her albums in a remastered boxset with all the b-sides and bonus tracks - a Complete Studio Recordings boxset.

I've seen people doubting that it was Stevie before, but never people doubting that it was Prince singing.
However the song has been turned to Atlantic Records by Stevie herself in 1998 among the possible inclusions for her upcoming boxset, it is dated 1985-6 and it's listed at Atlantic Records as a Stevie and Prince collaboration. If you want to know the real truth write to Atlantic Records.

I thought Billy Burnette did a song with Stevie for Rock a Little, before he joined FM. I thought it was the song everyone is saying they think was Prince, but of course they sound nothing alike. Anyone know the name of the song with Billy?

Stevie and Billy recorded the country classic "Are You Mine." The recording was never released officially, but surfaced via bootleg tapes and has circulated amongst fans for decades now.
Side note - The press release for The Wild Heart deluxe release lists "Are You Mine" - (demo) on Disc 2 -Bonus tracks

I consider "Rock A Little" to be her weakest record. As a 15 year old teenager in the 80's I was hooked on the album, listening to it for a solid year---thus, I know it back and forth. However, "Rock A Little" just hasn't stood the test of time and sounds complete dated. I tried to listen to "RAL" on Spotify the other day for the first time in over 20 years. I couldn't get through it. It's just to 80's synthesizered and overproduced for my taste.

In contrast, "Bella Donna" and "Wild Heart" have held up and still sound completely fresh to me.
I agree with you about RAL. I was also 15 when the album came out. I also agree its her weakest album. However, the demos and outtakes are some of the most interesting in her career.
I love Running Through the Garden and some of The Nightmare outtakes. I hate the Rock A Little song on the album. Its a real odd ball. However, the longer (seems to be original) cut is actually pretty good. I also think the other cut of Some Become Strangers is so much better than the album cut.
So while I don't care for RAL, I would be thrilled for some of these gems to be released. Unfortunately, many of the RAL performances were terrible so I bet we would never get a live CD
Have you ever heard the 1986 Rhiannon in Chicago when she does not even know when to sing? Then she has no shame and says "This is my song....I got this." But all she does is keep singing the same verse over and over. Its so bad that its good

Thanks for the info, Karma and Christopher! Glad it'll be on the Wild Heart.

Obviously, a RAL Deluxe would have to include the 'softer' version of Talk to Me, previously available on an 80's greatest hits CD.

Thanks for the info. Do you have official documentation of this track being considered for the box set, or being listed at Atlantic Records as Stevie/Prince? I'd love to see that. if someone can produce it.

Prince has a wide vocal range, and that male voice sounds nothing like him. It sounds like a white guy trying to be soulful. Now it's always possible that Prince could have had another band member sing with Stevie. But I can't imagine who that would be, given my extensive knowledge of Prince's musicians in the '80s and beyond. Drummer Bobby Z. or keyboardist Matt Fink weren't given opportunities to step up to the mike for prominent vocals. And it's not bassist Brown Mark.

And the "Stevie" vocal? In what era did Stevie sound like that? This singer has a vaguely raspy quality to her voice, but it bears little resemblance to any era of Nicks' changing voice.

Perhaps you might be curious to this song closely with headphones again and see if your opinion changes.

I understand that people like the idea that Prince and Stevie worked together again (and she does claim he offered her an opportunity to write lyrics to the "Purple Rain" track).

But Prince is way too funky for the rudimentary chicken scratch on "All Over You." The actual performers of this track would be lucky to have been booked as an opening act at a Holiday Inn lounge where tourists fear to travel. This is not the work of two legends.

But again, I'd love to see any official documentation (even a news article mentioning the track).

I did find a couple of brief threads on this track and prince.org with the wide consensus that it was a fake. The only fan who seemed to think it was real called herself PurpleGypsy and seemed a little deluded.

That's hilarious!

Add me to the list of folks who think that this outtake is definitely NOT Prince or Stevie. And if there WAS something that Stevie turned into Atlantic called "All Over You" featuring her and Prince, then it's definitely something no one has heard yet. It it's real, maybe we'll get it on the "RAL" deluxe set?

The info I got is from Mike Bise's site that now has unfortunately been shut down, however I transcripted his extensive article on the RAL sessions here, you can the information I talked about: http://www.ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/sh...3&postcount=12
If you want more precise background info ask Mike, he's reachable on facebook and google+ as Michael Bise and he's very helpful.

About the demo I'm not a Prince connoisseur so I can't judge on that, but Stevie is another matter. As I've already said, the tape is dated as being recorded during the RAL era. I remember well the demo, and yes at first I didn't recognize their voices too, but it is evident that the voices have been greatly altered with studio effects. After listening very well I found some similarities between the female voice in the chorus and Stevie's schreeching altered studio voice that she used in some songs during this period.

As for the song, I don't find it ugly but it is very flawed like all early demos are. This was probably a very early and uncompleted version, who knows how it would have sound once it got completed? The sounds of their voices were just backing vocals and more and better vocals with their actual voices would have been added. This would fit with the fact that their collaboration has been supposedly very short.

Rock A Little is the weakest output from Stevie durning the 1980s. As another Ledgie pointed out, it sounds quite dated and is overproduced. It has not stood the test of time, whereas Bella Donna, The Wild Heart and to a degree, The Other Side of the Mirror have held up remarkably well. I own Rock A Little, but like I did with Street Angel, I only have it to complete my collection of Stevie's solo albums. If it ever gets a deluxe reissue, I don't think I'm going to bother getting it.

However, I hope they do something with Tango in the Night. I think that was the last good album that Mac has put out, to date.

I too doubt that All Over You is Stevie and Prince. I would ask - what is the source for that track being among the demos turned in to Atlantic. Really, it's just hearsay unless Stevie herself or an industry spokesperson said it. There's a demo CD that has circulated called "Enchanted Outtakes"and it's on there - but again- what is the source for that? All of the demo compilations that have circulated amongst fans were fan-created.

I'd be really shocked (and sort of disappointed) if it turned out tot be Stevie and Prince because it's kind of...garbage.

And let's not forget the faked "demo" that so many were convinced was real - Do I Bring You Down.

Sorry if I repeat myself but probably my posts are TLDR, I had said that the source is Mike Bise that said in his old report on the RAL sessions:
Quote:
When Stevie turned in several tapes to Atlantic Records in Manhattan in Early 1998, among the songs to be considered for inclusion on her upcoming box set was “All Over You.” The song is from the Rock A Little era and is recorded with Prince [...] However, it is 100% certain that Stevie herself handed over the tape with “All Over You” on it to Atlantic Records, so there should be no confusion that it is definitely Stevie singing on this song with Prince.
