It is an actual strategy to throw a lot of mud around and burn people off of both parties. It's too bad a new third party couldn't have gotten going about when Ross Perot was dragging his pie charts around. By now they might have been more legitimately electable than Hillary and Trump led big two. But I remember people who did vote Reform were given heck for taking away from Bush Sr., then people who voted Ralph Nader/Green were blamed for Bush Jr. but it's never wrong to actually vote for something.

Remember, a write-in vote for Count Chocula is a vote for candy disguised as cereal.

Great video! I admire the way those kids handled themselves. Very informed, peaceful, and respectful. America needs more debate and discussion, not violence. This gives me hope for the future of America and the world.

Brexit: Sombre mood in divided Britain as referendum on EU membership looms
Lateline
By Brigid Andersen

A divided Briton will soon vote in a referendum on the nation's European Union membership under a cloud of grief for murdered politician Jo Cox.

Polls are on a knife-edge, with final campaigning underway for the vote that could see the UK leave the EU after 43 years.

The deputy leader of the UK's Labour Party, Tom Watson, told Lateline the murder of his colleague and pro-EU politician Ms Cox is on everyone's minds, though he was unsure if it would affect the outcome.

"Whatever happens on the result we're going to end up a more divided nation as a result of this debate and we're going to have to do a lot of healing and understanding," he said.

"We've had more sombre campaigning this week, so I think there'll be more cooler heads when it comes to referendum day [on Thursday local time] but I'm not sure it will affect the outcome or not."

Mr Watson said the murder and the Brexit debate had highlighted the need for a more patient and kinder political culture.

"The whole political system is rocked. I know it's had an impact around the world and there's a lot of soul searching in the heart of politics to see whether we can learn lessons from this," he said.

Ms Cox was shot and stabbed to death in Leeds in England's north last Thursday, in an attack her husband said was politically motivated.

Overnight, her family was to mark what would have been her 42nd birthday with an emotional river tribute and a rally in London.

The commemoration in the city's central Trafalgar Square was set to include Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, with similar events to take place later in cities around the world, among them Beirut, Nairobi, New York and Paris.
Cameron pushes case to Remain

Prime Minister David Cameron, who is pro-EU, is doing his final campaigning, with the fate of his leadership potentially hanging on the result of the referendum.

Mr Cameron called the referendum under pressure from his Conservative Party.

"If we leave we will diminish our country and our ability to get things done in the world," he told supporters in Bristol in western England.

"We've got one day left to hammer out that message; stronger, safer, better off. Please give it everything you've got in these last hours to make sure that people go out and vote."

There have been predictions a Brexit could cause financial catastrophe on global markets and even lead to a new world war.

But leave campaigners say breaking up with the EU will allow Britain to regain control of immigration.

Boris Johnson, one of the main Leave campaigners and rumoured replacement for Mr Cameron as PM, said Thursday could become Britain's independence day.

"They say we have no choice but to bow down to Brussels. We say they are woefully underestimating this country and what it can do," he said.

UK House of Lords member Robert Hayward told The World program the economic message had been getting through to voters in the last few days, but the outcome was still too close to call.

"There's no question that the momentum is with the Remain side, whether they've picked up the momentum early enough to overtake Leave I'm not sure," he said.
Australia warned about same-sex marriage plebiscite

Meanwhile, after witnessing three major votes in the UK in the past decade, Mr Watson had a warning for Australia on the upcoming plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

"It generates a lot of hate but not a lot of light," he said.

"Leadership of these campaigns has played to the lowest common denominator and I'm not sure if we've given the British people the rational debate they need to make a decision.

"When people do a post mortem of the last month I think most MPs and most voters will probably say don't ever have a referendum in Britain again. It's been very, very negative.

"The nation ends up completely divided. People bewildered by claim and counter-claim and it's very hard to make a rational decision. I think we should restate the case for representative democracy and accountable politicians."

Australian politicians have also been debating on whether the plebiscite will stoke hatred and bigotry.

Well personally, I really hope we stay in the EU.

I'm not sure why it was necessary to have a referendum. It seems to have caused much trouble including the murder of Jo Cox I'll be glad when it's over and done with.

I agree with this, I spoke to someone this morning who is totally bewildered from hearing so much about it on the news, she doesn't know which way to vote.

Certainly not a difficult one for me. Pro- EU all the way. Its definitely on a knife edge but all the bookies seem to favour 'Remain'.
