These drugs are potentially so dangerous, and people think they are safe because a doctor prescribes them. If you take them long term and end up physically, emotionally and mentally dependent, it must be almost impossible to stop taking it without needing serious help. As tolerance develops you need more and more until you reach overdose levels.

It says in the article above that in the US it's aggressively marketed and in some towns 40% of the population are addicted to it

I have a particular interest in this kind of subject. My degree is in Biochemistry but I chose not to work in the field, as I don't agree with a lot of what is happening in the pharmaceutical industries. On the few occasions I've been given a prescription most have ended up in the bin. (And I know that I'm generalising and I am aware some drugs are lifesavers and even opioids are great in certain circumstances ).

I found this article to be the most informative about how the addiction specialist was trying to help Prince, but it was too late.

Bump for update, BUT news reports today (Thursday) indicate that he died of an "Opioid Induced" overdose.

Yes .I just caught this on Google news.

By Tribune news servicesContact Reporter

Tests show that Prince died of an opioid overdose, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The 57-year-old singer was found dead April 21 at his Minneapolis-area estate.

The official, who is close to the investigation, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The findings confirm suspicions that opioids played a role in the musician's death. After he died, a law enforcement official told the AP that investigators were examining whether an overdose was to blame and whether a doctor had prescribed him drugs in the preceding weeks.

Yes, lots of people wanting quick fix easy solutions to physical or emotional pain (often at a cost), and the pharmaceutical companies are more then happy to oblige.

It sounds as though Prince was suffering from intense withdrawal and the only way of dealing with that was to take more pills, either that or enter the gates of hell.

I think the only way of getting him out of what was possibly a very long term addiction would have been to lock him up and supervise him, something I very much doubt that he wanted.

I've been reading the best selling books about an ex-homeless heroin addict that rescues a cat and gets rescued back - A Street Cat named Bob - and I'm now reading - The World According to Bob. Great books. In his first book he talks about using Suboxone (Buprenorphine) to get off methadone and eventually to get clean. This is the drug the addiction doctor's son had on him when he found Prince. It appears that only some doctors can prescribe it.

http://www.buprenorphine-doctors.com...dependence.cfm

I found the following descriptions on the website page above:

Opioid dependence is a condition wherein a person cannot stop using these drugs, even if he or she knows they are harmful.

Opioids rearrange brain chemicals to make the person think that the drugs are necessary to survive. This upset in brain chemistry will lead the dependent person to do anything to obtain the drugs.

Some of the most serious symptoms of withdrawal can be deadly. These include cardiac arrest, stroke, seizures, and suicide attempts. The latter in the list is an example of how psychologically distraught an opioid dependent may become after a long period of use.

I can imagine Prince being psychologically distraught and not able to bear the thought of life without this drug.

Just to reiterate... I'm not against all pharmaceuticals - the industry just seems to have gotten way, way out of control.

I find Ibuprofen really helpful at times and codeine only very occasionally - like when I had the most horrendous chest infection and when I trapped my finger in the car door - I was very grateful for opiates on that day.

I was working for a women today that who is dealing with long term intense pain and the doctor keeps suggesting morphine. She keeps refusing, preferring to manage her pain in other ways on different painkillers (non opiates) and possibly an operation.

I know someone who took Morphine for a month and had horrific withdrawal symptoms, but then another women I know took it for 6 months before an operation and seemed to come off it no problem - maybe some people are not so susceptible to addiction.

From the NY Times.

He (Prince) also was preparing to be treated for an opioid dependency from a California doctor, Howard Kornfeld.

The doctor’s son, Andrew Kornfeld, and two friends of Prince initially found him collapsed. Andrew Kornfeld, who works for his father’s treatment center, had rushed on an overnight flight from San Francisco to get Prince enrolled in treatment, according to William Mauzy, a lawyer for the Kornfelds, who said the star’s representatives had sought the help.

http://www.narconon.org/drug-abuse/f...-symptoms.html

Different people become addicted at different rates. Some addicts try to prevent addiction by letting time pass between usages of strong opiates and others feel compelled to use the drug continuously once they start, which walks them straight into addiction. Those coming off heavy fentanyl abuse will often be weaned down to a lower level before going through withdrawal, as unsupported withdrawal from strong opiates can be brutal.

bloody dog abuse But that's great you could help her, and yes I'm sure Fentanyl works wonders for some things.

Well that's my light bed-time reading for tonight (fentanyl addiction).... maybe time to turn off my computer

His local paper from MN is confirming the same: (Fentanyl is a super strong opiate and should only be used by docs and under strict supervision......

Well it looks like they ruled out AIDS or HIV status.

Fentanyl is a terrifying drug, and many people are abusing it.

I wonder how Stevie feels about this - knowing the way that he frowned on her drug use. Who would have thought he would go first, and she is still going fine these days.

So many ironies. In some ways he had a difficult life. He spoke about being bullied as a kid, family problems, and his only child died not long after being born.

(That's if there isn't any secret kids out there, as some are claiming. Well they can go get a DNA test.)

I'm not a fan of taking pain killers and other meds. I used Vicodin for my mouth infection and got rid of the pain and felt great and finely get good sleep after dealing with a couple sleepless nights of pain. .I was alittle worried about using it after I read the info on it.Luckily I did not get hooked on it.OK who is it to blame .Him or his doctor pushed it on him.
