I was listening to a bunch of Christine McVie interviews she did in 2004 to promote her In The Meantime album. During one interview she talks about how the band reunited in 1993 for Don't Stop. She says something like "we could not use the Rumours version so we had to go to the studio"
The only implication I could make from that line is that there was a pre-recorded track the band played to during that night. I never knew this but it would make sense. Anyone else ever hear this? I posted all the interviews on the Christine McVie threads.

Yes, I believe they did. Chris could also be talking about how they rehearsed for the live performance (although I read somewhere that Chris has mentioned her piano wasn't even working on stage.)

It also could explain how the song went on forever without an ending LOL. If they went so far to tape Stevie's tambourine they took NO chances
The microphones were on but it appears some/most of the track was pre-recorded. Interesting stuff listening to rare interviews.

What possible reason would there be for them not to be able to perform the song live? Does her quote mean "we couldn't fake the studio album take, so we recorded another version to fake perform." ???

Its funny because I remember at the time the press asked the band if they were going to have any trouble playing it since they had not played together so long. They said no, they could play the song in their sleep. I will have to listen to the quote again but I am certain she said "we could not use the Rumours version so had to go to the studio. Edit: Listen at 1:15 (one hour fifteen, not one minute) when she starts talking about 1992 and Clinton using the song. They sung Don't Stop Live but there was a pre-recorded track they played along to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zuu...o9eUVw&index=1

I'd guess it wasn't the band but the powers that be. It was obviously a really important occasion so perhaps the Clinton 'machine' or the TV network/s wanted to ensure there were no technical problems. I suppose somebody behind the scenes insisted they pre-record a 'live' take.

I think this is common practice for presidential events. Beyonce came under fire I think during President Obama's reelection for pre-recording and lipsyncing the national anthem... I don't get the shock personally... It's a national government event. They just wouldn't take the chance of something going wrong.

Wow, never knew it was pre-recorded. Have to say though that when I first watched the inaugural ball I thought it sounded kinda bad to be honest

I had my sister record it on the VCR and watched it when I got home. It was not horrible but I thought their version in 1990 that I saw live with Billy and Rick was much better.

I thought they were singing and playing live.
Heres Pres Clinton's FM inaugural footage from YT from user Lindsey Buckingham Gems From user Fleetwood Mac If they were performing in last weeks Macy's Thanksgiving day parade. They will be lip syncing to a tape or singing live to pre-recorded music.

I forgot how long they strung that ending out. Way too many chorus's- to the point of being quite painful. Kick in with another guitar solo Lindsey.
