Stevie on the Madonna/Britney MTV Kiss

I think what Stevie meant by the age had nothing to do with age differences in relationships, but in the fact that Madonna, a well-established artist of about the same age/generation of Stevie, would be getting herself involved in this thing with someone who is younger and might not be around for much longer (as Stevie alluded to). Like she shouldn't HAVE to be participating in this kind-of publicity thing.

Well, I don't think Stevie is the only "star" shocked by this kiss.

Did you see the TV shot of Justin Timberlake? Of course, he looked anything but pleased. However, in that same shot, you can see Mary J. Blige in the background with this look of horror on her face . . . .

I just don't see why she cares, but ohhhkay. Hopefully she wasn't seriously trying to take a stab at the dipqueens of pop.

They may be digging themselves into a hole, but honestly, with 50 million bucks set aside, does it really matter? The names "Britney Spears" and "Christina Aguilera" are industries in and of themselves, regardless of the music. They make more money from merchandising than they do their music that should be soooo important.

And in 20 years? I'd be willing to bet that people will still remember "that girl who wore that school girl outfit and danced with snakes.. you know, the hit me one more time or whatever girl.. who was that? Oh yeah, Britney Spears." and.. "the dirty one.. the one that looked like she needed to take a shower.. who was that? Oh yeah, Christina Aguilera." We may only remember them out of dislike, but now, there's a shock element to remember them with.. doesn't sound like hole digging to me- especially if Madonna is involved. Even if Christina and Britney ARE forgotten, Madonna won't be, and neither will that moment. They went for shock and attention.. hey guess what.. they got it. Even Stevie is giving it to them.

The industry is different now, Stevie- realize this. And after you realize it? Make a frigging music video. You can do it.

Remember folks, we're talking about "talent" from a young woman who sings songs like "Oops, I did it again". Where is the songwriting talent?? NIL!

Meanwhile we have Stevie, cranking out amazing poetic songs like Smile At You, Destiny Rules, Running Thru The Garden.

Don't you mean where is the singing talent? Hootchie Spears sounds a drag queen doing impromptu karaoke. No one can argue that her voice is anything but average. No one.

The ONLY reason, IMO, that the press asks celebs what they think of others is to START STUFF, to STIR THE POT, to CAUSE TROUBLE...because we all know, we don't watch TV, read newspapers, etc. for nicey-nice stuff.

The press has that sinister undercurrent underneath it, while all the while, trying to look like they care and are there to give us the news with objectivity.

Well, I just got home from the gym where for some strange reason I thought about this on the StairMaster In the beginning, Stevie wore very skimpy/loe cut/filmy outfits. Granted, they were not as outlandish as today's stuff, but they were pretty much the riske stuff of that time. Moreover, the bottom line is like the women today, Stevie used sex to sell her records. I agree it may have not been as extreme as it is today, but the principal is the same. Stevie did and does have talent, but so do some of the young girls out there today although it may not be to our or my liking. I mean when you think about it they all use sex to sell to varying degrees - it is just human nature.

But at the same time, Stevie and others like her who've been in the business for decades *know* that that is how the media works and if they want to buy into it, it's their fault and not the media's. I don't think the media or the journalist should be at fault here, Stevie said what she said knowing full well what could've been printed. I don't disagree with a word she said, but she's a woman of 55, she's been around the block more than enough, and she knew what the repercussions could be if she opened her mouth about the issue. But then again, Michael Jackson wasn't aware of the repurcussions for dangling his baby...

"I love you Stevie, but you should have taken your advice that you gave to Natalie Maines and kept your mouth shut if you want people to buy your records. Remember that line ??"

Does anyone know what article this is from or what interview? I tend to not believe that Stevie said the J.Lo line, it sounds out of character and just sort of thrown in to add some fluff. Ive never read a comment of hers being that off the wall.

But I was taken a back by the comment above in regards to Stevie being a hypocrit for using drugs etc and not being perfect herself---because Stevie has never sold anything using sex appeal and she surely hasnt used shock value to reinvent herself or sell records and thats what Stevie was refering to in the article. She didnt use drugs to portray an image that would help sell herself or records.

I respectfully disagree.

Stevie hauled out in very carefully planned and very low cut outfits made of very sexy black chiffon (an odd if not shocking sight) that revealed her surgically enhanced breasts and was coked up out of her head until 1985 but gave spectacular performaces which set a standard she is still judged by today as much as 30 years later. Granted, she is not coked up anymore, but she is still trying (successfully in my opinion) to be sexy by exposing a leg every now and then and also hauling her boobs higher to heaven during Rhiannon. I am pretty sure she is doing this for sex appeal on her own terms because she has been doing this all along. I say more more power to her, but at the same time I think it is a little hypocritical to criticize someone else for doing basically the same thing and a thing that was not really done at all in her day.

Thus, my point, it is all about degrees of severity.

Spears talent lies with whoever is producing her record and mixing her. I am convinced the girl cannot sing and yes, I've seen her live (don't ask). It also lies in the fact that she dresses like a complete ho, purely for shock factor. That's where the digging a hole thing comes in. What are you gonna do to top all that? Pretty soon you're going to run out of options. Like I said on another thread, I hope she invests wisely.
As for Christina, girlfriend can sing. It's excellent advice for her to write her own songs. There will come a time when she won't be able to run around almost naked anymore. Then what? I notice Madonna wears far more clothing than she used to. Don't even bring up Cher's body or I'll tell the goatee joke.
Has anyone else noticed that Stevie seems to be far more forthcoming in the foreign press? JMO.
