In 1986, a "Get Tough on Toxics" concert in Long Beach, Calif., featured Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, Neil Young and all of the "Eagles" except Glenn Frey. Frey was in hospital with an intestinal disorder.

Former Eagles To Reunite For 'Toxics' Benefit
August 07, 1986 Los Angeles Times

http://articles.latimes.com/1986-08-...enefit-concert

Former Eagles Don Henley and Glenn Frey will be part of the same concert lineup for the first time since the Eagles' final show in 1980 when they perform Aug. 28 at the Long Beach Arena in the "Get Tough on Toxics" benefit concert.

Henley and Frey are scheduled to play separate solo sets and are considering performing together. Former Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are expected to team on some songs at the concert, which also will feature Neil Young, Jimmy Buffett, Joni Mitchell. Other acts will be announced.

The concert is designed to raise funds for Citizens for a Livable Los Angeles and other organizations that support legislation and candidates favoring strict environmental protection.

Robert Hilburn : Some Gems In Unwieldy Benefit
August 30, 1986|ROBERT HILBURN

http://articles.latimes.com/1986-08-...enefit-concert

Glenn Frey made an appearance after all at the Get Tough on Toxics benefit concert Thursday night at the Long Beach Arena, but it was on film.

Too bad several of the artists who performed live on the bill--which included Stevie Nicks, Jimmy Buffett, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell--weren't also on film. It would have helped ease the logistical nightmare.

Frey, who had to bow out of the concert because of an intestinal disorder, kicked off an Eagles semi-reunion by strumming the opening notes of "Best of Our Love" on an acoustic guitar from his hospital bed in Aspen, Colo. When the film clip ended, former Eagles sidekicks Don Henley, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmidt then played the song live.

The device worked nicely. All the stage crew had to do was lower the screen and turn on the projector.

Unfortunately, the crew had too much to do the rest of the evening. Indeed, they seemed to spend as much time on stage as the musicians.

I remember going to this thing. It was a looong, boring night. You had to wait what seemed interminably for the next act. Sets were shorter than the waits. Warren Zevon ratcheted up the energy level, as did Stevie (alone) and Lindsey (alone). Lindsey was a bigger treat because no one had seen Lindsey live for four years. But Stevie's appearance was just a week after her tour stops in Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Diego, and a few months after her stop in Costa Mesa. It was an OD on Stevie summer for me. Lindsey should have played something from his solo albums, and he, Stevie, and Warren should have played Mohammed's Radio. A night of missed opportunities. When you do a big multi-act concert like this, follow the Last Waltz precedent: Bring everybody out all at once, and just do a big, collective, messy set.

I would have loved that. So, Lindsey didn't play his solo stuff. He just played his FM stuff alone? Sounds disappointing.

My recollection was that Lindsey was the highlight of the night. He killed it on I'm So Afraid. Danny Kortchmar was standing nearby and was gesturing to the audience as if to say "do you realize what you are seeing right now?!?!"

Thank you. Before he figured out how to ruin NGBA with all of his might. Oh-oh, Tango is the "Best thing we've ever done."
