Yes, I have such a playlist and I understood the thing about the vocals, it's just that this isn't what I define "insormountable".
As you said, Stevie's voice has a sort of muffledness throughout the record that is impossible to deny, but actually I sort of like it and I think it's deliberate. With age Stevie's voice has become, actually still is becoming, more nasal and shrill and these error of production or engineering actually smooth it out a bit.
A crispy sound on a record it's not always the best option.

there was a whole thread about the vocal issues on 24k... I just went back through the archive and couldn't find it. I only had time for a quick perusal of the list so maybe I just missed it. If anyone else can find that thread it might be useful to link it here so folks can see some of the very specific things people noted about her vocals.

Even though this is a Stevie forum, I would point out that Lindsey is acclaimed for his ability to both produce and engineer . In fact he did some of both on Tusk, Mirage, Tango, (though he had plenty of help with both) and then on SYW he really took on most of the engineering and all of the official producing. Naturally the songwriter/artist has their own vision for each song and the whole album and the producer has to work closely with the artist to help the artist refine their ideas and bring the album to its full potential. This is where and why Stevie and Lindsey butt heads working together in the studio.... Stevie has her ideas for her material and needs a producer to help her tweak that vision, edit her excesses, have a big picture of how to keep the artistic vision AND make it commercial, to translate her vague ideas into technical specifications for the musicians, etc. She's good on vision and not so good on technicalities. Lindsey used to be able to assist her by being a good editor and refiner of her ideas. Then he just became invested in being THE visionary in the band and began taking over, often producing her songs to HIS vision, not hers. Often she just let him because it was such a nightmare to argue with him. He would turn her songs into something she didn't recognize/like.

I think my expectations for 24KG were much lower than some so the issues don't bother me too much, I already figured that her voice would never do for me any more what it used to. What I love about 24KG are the songs that I consider really good. Starshine, The Dealer, Cathouse Blues, 24 Karat Gold perhaps most of all, I'm really happy to have these, even though they are not my ideal recordings at all. They can't be because Stevie's voice isn't what it used to be when she first wrote these songs, but since I made peace with not loving the sound of things any more as much as I ideally could I'm not very disappointed. I understand having a different opinion though, it's just not how I viewed this project anyway. (I'm also happy if I love 50% of Stevie's songwriting on an album, which is obviously a far cry from 100%, whereas someone else might see that as settling.)

He would also turn her songs into complete magic like Gold Dust Woman or Gypsy. He is completely responsible for those.

well, she wrote them so he's not COMPLETELY responsible.

But I agree that those songs wouldn't be the classics they are without his and Ken's and Richard's production on them. Which was why I said he used to be able to refine her songs so well. But that was in the 70s and 80s. Now, I personally liked a lot of what he did on her songs on SYW, but others, and Stevie, did not.

Folks have been talking about production issues on 24KG since it was released, but I'm not hearing them. I've got the album on vinyl and CD, and they both sound pretty good to me - especially on the big stereo speakers.

I really hope that Stevie uses the Fleetwood Mac tour break to record 24KGII in Nashville with Dave Stewart!

I really think it's a personal thing......I, myself, do not think Dave is the right producer for Stevie......there's no "edge" there. While I certainly didn't hate IYD or 24KG, I definitely think they would have been stronger with, say, Rick Rubin, T-Bone Burnett or Matt Serlatec producing.

I wonder how 24K sound if it was on 8 track.

Probably good through those Kraco 6x9's with a Kraco player.

24KG sounds pretty much like I expected it to under the circumstances.I still listen to many of the songs often.I also agree with whoever said that the muffled quality of some of her vocals may be a good thing for her more mature voice.Really for an album recorded in 3 week what were people expecting."Hounds of Love"

That's a great way to look at it. It's perfect in its imperfection.
