I am in the tiniest of minorities in my feeling that her dealings with the Heartbreakers seriously marred her music and killed her mystique.

Oh wow, that is a very interesting comment but I could not agree at all. I think the Heartbreakers completely launched Stevie into solo superstardom. When Stop Dragging My Heart Around was released........ it blew everyone's mind with such a hard hitting Stevie sound. If my memory is correct Tom Petty even produced part or all of Outside the Rain which is a favorite of mine. I know Stevie is a huge Heartbreaker fan but it was a match made in heaven IMHO. Her first 2 tours with Benmont Tench added such a musical layer to her live show. I remember during the Wild Heart tour when Benmont was introduced and the crowd would go wild and Stevie would say.....yes he is a Heartbreaker. His magical and mystical keyboard addition to Gold Dust Woman is amazing. To this day, I will say those versions of Gold Dust Woman are the only Stevie song her solo career did better live (than the Mac) and ONLY because of Heartbreaker Benmont Tench. That 83 live version...so raw, so mystical, so dark. He took Gold Dust to a place the Mac never could.
To quote Stevie......she came in...out of the darkness and the Heartbreakers were a reason
I think Stevie is better known for "I need to know" than Tom
Their songs together like Insider and Needles and Pins are classic.
We know Stevie does I need to know almost every tour but I ALWAYS wanted her to tackle Tom's Change of Heart live. Listen and tell me its not a perfect Stevie song.

When she began her solo career, she said she wanted to sound like the female version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. And now she is considered to be a honorary member of their band. It's a natural fit when she sings with them.

Aside from her own songs that feature various Heartbreakers, she is featured on a few of their songs Insider, The Apartment Song, their cover of Needles & Pins, and othersI can't think of at the moment! Also, she covered I Need to Know and Free Falling.

Unlike the Eagle, I don't think she slept her way though the Heartbreakers. Her relationships with them were more musical than sexual. She appeared and became the sister they weren't aware they had. "Even if you don't need her, tell her you need her. She needs you brother."

I understand that. But mystique has its limits.

I'm with you there. Can't stand Petty (or Sheryl Crow).

Thanks Dr. Brown it is nice to know that I am not alone. I am always puzzled at the love most on these forums have for the Tom Petty influence on Stevie. What I hear is wasted potential. Anodyne songs set against flat, grating, tinny instrumentals, all which make Stevie's talents seem really limited. She seems to try to imitate Petty with her vocals, which just makes everything all the more unpleasant to the ear.

Sheryl Crow also fugged things up by making Stevie sound like a cow bellowing in an empty rain barrel to the guitar fumblings of my cousin Bubba, recorded on a 1980's era cassette recorder.

Wow, that's harsh but I can't gainsay you there.

Hmm. I see what you mean - her sound with the Heartbreakers is really completely unlike what she was doing with Lindsey or Fleetwood Mac, and it went on to touch the rest of her career.

But, that's a Gemini for you - two-part personality - the flower, and the vine.
