Very true. However, I believe that the hit tour style is really down to the Mac's own decisions. It's a matter of a artists setting their own expectations.

For instance, Springsteen has had a number of tours as of late and, with the exception of the Working On A Dream tour, his sets have always highlighted new material - this is going back to his very early days of touring. Additionally, he has a record of playing number of deep cuts during shows (another expectation that fans and many newcomers have when attending his shows).

Fleetwood Mac has always relied on the "hits" to carry their shows. Look back at the Tusk tour. Sure, they played Tusk material. However, the bulk of the list came from FM/Rumours. Same with Mirage (although I would argue they did more deep cuts than normal here). Same with the Tango tour. Same with The Dance. Same with Say You Will. It's a precedent the band set and continues to maintain.

Personally, having been able to witness the On With The Show tour, I can say that I do not mind. Would I like to have heard Brown Eyes? Walk A Thin Line? Angel? Tango In The Night? Of course I would have. However, as a show, the hits that FM plays are iconic and make for an awesome rock show experience.

I want a new album from them as much as anybody. And I do hope that, if in fact the album comes to be, that their tour will consist of new material However, a show without a great deal of their hits just does not seem likely. They have never been a 'risky' band in terms of set selection before, I do not see how that will start now.

Whenever they've put out a new album they've always played a small selection from that album. I'd expect to hear 5 or 6 new songs in a short tour next year. Of course their set list is always largely going to consist of hits. Both Lindsey and Mick are suggesting a focus on an album in early 2016. Lindsey has no intention of returning to solo work in any hurry after the current tour and seems fully committed to work with Fleetwood Mac. If they wrap up an album in early 2016 they will need to promote it. That will in part involve live concerts.

So cynical! A marketing ploy? There is nothing being marketed. Why question the sincerity that he and Christine enjoyed an inspired and prosperous songwriting collaboration? I'ts such a benign expression. Why is that something to bitch about?

They are not that smart. The members may have their opinions about the way they are marketed. But they are artists, not marketers. Ultimately their record company makes most of the decisions.

they don't have a record company.

but i agree with you, if their recent history can teach us anything, it's that they are not that smart.

Good point...Could it be that WB has no interest in new material from FM at this time...With 2017 being the big 50/40 year for the band it would probably be easier (and more profitable) for WB to put out another "Special Edition" whatever in 2017 than sign the band to a new contract...

I just don't get why they are so hung up on Warner's. I get that that is where their catalog is, but WB hasn't worked terribly hard on their behalf in recent years.

It's a status symbol /ego thing kind of like the old Hollywood star wanting to work for the big movie company one last time...

What do you mean "nothing being marketed"? Just the MENTION of new material being worked on IS "marketing"...it's stirring the pot of interest at the first budding of the seed. Because once the album is released, how many songs will make it to the concert stage? 1? 2? 3? if we're lucky, maybe 3. If the material is THAT good, then play the whole F-ing album. The LATEST album, not 3/4 of the album you released nearly 40 years ago. Drop some of the songs that are more moldy than Mrs Bates sitting in her rocking chair next to her motel.

I'd be hopeful of more than that. we had 2 new songs in the set on the back of the EP alone.

On the Tusk tour they obviously played a lot of new material.
On the Mirage tour they played 4/5 new songs.
After that it has always been different scenarios;
The Tango and Mask tours each had about 4/5 new songs from the album (plus older, pre B/N material).
On the 'Time tour' they played....er, lots of covers.
They played 7 or 8 new songs on the Say You will tour.

I'd expect 2 new songs per writer on the back of a new album.

But the reality is the fans love those songs and the band probably really enjoys the response they get when they play a song people love.

But they will definitely play more than 3 new songs. They've never played as few as 3 new songs from an album. In all your pent up frustration about the greatest hits tours you must've forgotten how the band operates when they actually do release an album. They promote it very well on stage. More than most bands their age and stature would.

Wake up...you're dreaming.
Granted, the rules were different before the end of the Tusk tour.
Mirage:
Eyes Of The World
Gypsy
Love In Store
Hold Me (and that was dropped before the end of the tour)
(no 5th song)

Tango In The Night:
Little Lies
Everywhere
Isn't It Midnight
Seven Wonders

Behind The Mask:
In The Back Of My Mind
Stand On The Rock
Skies The Limit
Save Me

Time: There wasn't a tour for it...it was released AFTER the tour ended.
BUT, they DID play "Blow By Blow" & "Dreaming The Dream" on the tour that preceded the album's release...as well as Billy's "The Bigger The Love" which was slated to be on the "new" album (then titled Another Link In The Chain) up until they revamped it to include Christine's songs.

No...I remember very clearly how the band operates...they hammer us with Rumours and the '75 album and new material be damned. Sure, they'll start a tour playing a bunch of songs from a new album (in the case of Say You Will, but look how quickly they started dropping the new tunes as the tour progressed. Started off playing 8 or 9 songs, but 3 songs didn't make it to the 2nd show of the tour (or any subsequent show). Then one by one, they dropped more SYW songs. Until all that was left was the title cut, "Peacekeeper", "Come" & "Goodbye Baby". After all the BS in interviews that they'd just done "the best material they've ever done". It's all BS. PLAY the new stuff, the entire f-ing album, until it's hammered home by us faithful that it's what we're going to hear and that we'd be f-ing lucky to hear any "hits". If they'd cater to long-time fans instead of the few people who hadn't seen them before, they might earn a penny's worth of credibility. But, at this point, they're a sad nostalgia act. Still trying to suck some life out of a long dead romance.

The final show of 2004 also included "Red Rover". In total they played 9 new songs of 18 on the tour. It was well represented and they played no fewer than 5 and as many as 8 at any given show so it still doesn't make sense that you would presume they'd play 3 new songs at most and possibly fewer off a new album when they've never done that before.

And while they're catering to the hard core fans playing the entire new album their attendance numbers will dwindle. Nice strategy. You, we, aren't the ones filling arenas. They can't play basketball arenas and ignore their hits.

Gee, so much anger- unnecessarily so.
Unless I'm much mistaken Hold Me was kept to the end of the tour. Even The Dance tour had 4 new songs. Therein, they've had at least 4 new songs as regulars in the set for every single tour.
On the Billy/Rick tours they did a lot of other material in addition to the 'new' material.
Say You Will had 5 ever present songs, one more that was played at the majority of dates and one more that had significant plays.
Your 3 songs assertion is pretty much crap!
