Agreed! She's up against Barbra, who continues to chart high, and Gaga/Bennett - overall, I'm very pleased with how well her album is doing, particularly given that she has no real time to promote it, nor is she doing a tour on it.

While I agree with this I don't think her vocals were up to par in 2001. She had that deep strained constipated thing going on "He was very younnnnng" I think this album was released at the perfect time for her vocally and as she solidifies her legacy. She has come full circle since the Klonopin years and really turned things around.

I wonder what record companies are thinking. They may feel lucky when someone sales 10,000 copies. Sales are horrible. Sheryl Crow last album only sold around 50,000 total and she had a too 20 country hit. I look for record companies to let more artists go. They can't afford to develop them anymore.

US Album Sales Hit New All-Time Low


This week, for the first time since SoundScan began tracking music sales back in 1991, weekly album sales have fallen under four million. For the past charting week, there were only 3.97 million albums sold—a figure that includes physical and digital sales.

Last year, album sales were just about one million copies stronger. In fact, this same week in 2013, album sales added up to 4.88 million, compared to just 300,000 under four million this time around.

This same news story popped up a year or so ago, when album sales first dipped below five million for the first time. In 2014, there have only been five weeks so far where the industry has managed to push at least five million copies. While the number of weeks may go up as the holiday season approaches and consumers rush out to buy gifts, but it’s clear that soon five million albums sold in a week will become a memory.

Overall album sales in the United States are down a disheartening 14.6 percent, and while when album sales began to slide in the early aughts, it was only physical sales being eroded by digital downloads, now all forms of album sales are on a downward spiral. Since last year, digital album sales have begun to fall, with purchases of full collections receding 11.7 percent. Digital single-track downloads are backtracking even more, losing 12.8 percent compared to last year.

Physical sales of CDs are hurting more than digital or the combined total, with that number dropping just over 19 percent from this time in 2013. To break that down even further, physical discs being sold at mass merchants (such as Target and Walmart) down 23 percent, and the same sales at CD store chains down over 25 percent. Out of all those that sell albums, smaller stores are being hit the hardest.


For years, the music industry touted impressive iTunes sales figures as a sign that people still wanted to purchase music, but not in a physical form any longer. Now that all forms of digital purchase are on their way down alongside physical (though not as sharply), streaming has taken a leading role in where the dollars are headed. More and more, people are willing to spend some money on music, but consumers are insisting on getting more for their buck, including choices.

I definitely see the logic behind the bundle release of 24k Gold. With music sales in the tank, WB probably figured that Stevie at least had a couple thousand fans that would buy the $60 bundle. If you didn't have a bundle at all, they would just buy the album straight out. If the bundles account for just 2,000 of this 25,000 or so - thats over $100k right there in sales as opposed to say $28,000-30,000 for that same 2,000. Smart move by them. They know albums aren't selling that much these days..A veteran artist like Stevie definitely draws in a higher income crowd (due to age alone).
