I'm not that disappointed about the inclusion of this song, because I more or less look at this release as I would any other Stevie album, and she's always thrown another songwriter into the mix. But I do think Vanessa's songwriting and Stevie's voice aren't an ideal match. I'm not expecting this to be an album highlight.
Thank you! To asume that Stevie chose this song over another vault song doesn't make sense to me. Likely there was no Sophie's Choice moment, picking one over another. She recorded all the vault songs she wanted to record (or re-record, which was the case for Twisted) and she just decided to add this song to the project. I'm not too crazy about the song's inclusion, as it does break ranks with the much vaunted vault concept. But that's just how Stevie rolls, sometimes throwing curve balls.

Maybe Stevie included "Carousel" as a wedding gift to Carlton? Carlton will get royalties from it.

That's what I think. She did it for Vanessa as a favor or a gift and Vanessa will get royalties from the sales. Yeah, it doesn't make sense that she would include it on an album of her own unreleased songs but maybe Stevie didn't care.

The Examiner notes that this is Stevie's 1oth solo album, the first solo album after the "highly successful" In Your Dreams.

It's 12 albums if you include her 3 compilations and sessions album. Otherwise it's 8 albums. They were wrong twice!

Prior to the release of 'In Your Dreams,' there was talk of 15 tracks having been recorded. I can't remember where that number came from, but I remember it being discussed several times here. When the track-listing for the regular and deluxe editions were announced, including 13 & 14 tracks respectively, some Ledgies pondered what became of the 15th track.

Is it at all possible that Stevie originally recorded "Carousel" in 2010, around the same time Vanessa recorded it for 'Rabbits On The Run,' and then opted to not release it? (Not entirely implausible, mind you, when you consider the fact that even after Stevie recorded and released "It's Only Love" on 'TISL,' Sheryl Crow also recorded it for her own album and released it less than a year later.)

If that's the case, it would be a "vault" song in a sense -- just not one written by Stevie herself.

I thought about this possibility too. They could have even worked on it together, which is why Vanessa didn't give Stevie an album credit, much like Stevie didn't give Prince a writing credit for Stand Back. I just seriously doubt Stevie would do a cover, and not mention it when talking about the album. I go back to her statement, "These songs were written from 1969 through 1987 and 1995 and 1996" or something along those lines, and no mention of a cover. I understand that Stevie does what she wants to, no matter how trite it may seem to all of us, but I just don't see the role that this song plays in the "vault" theme. No matter what the reason though, I'm excited to see what Stevie will do with this song.
