so when I first read in this thread that Carousel was penned by VC I was a little bummed but now that I've listened to it a few times, I don't really care. I think it sounds great...good vocal, pretty harmonies and a catchy hook. All this in 14 seconds!

I did say I giving up the snippets but I just can't. No Stevie willpower I guess.

OK - it's not an old demo, but we've got plenty of those to celebrate on this album anyway!

And the actual song - I really like it, I think Stevie sounds great, like the harmonies, quite catchy.

The excitement builds!

Default well..

very nice song, but I was hoping Carousel was either "Spinning Wheel" or "At the Fair."

Keith, the dreamer.

The Ledge - where we all wish Stevie had died after 1984. (I actually read that on a Facebook group)

On topic, the song sounds good, but I'm not a fan of Vanessa, and thus, her work is largely unfamiliar to me.

For some reason I have a feeling this is really Stevie's song.. to me "It's hard to know what's good for you, I know she let you down, but the fever breaks when it's too much to take, so you can put your weapons down" sounds like a Stevie line.. Maybe it's just me, but if you look at the video, there is some definite Stevie influence... Like that whole white winged dove thing with the dress, and you can't forget that shawl action My guess is Stevie wrote it, gave it to Vanessa, Vanessa changed most of the words, and kept the Stevie influence.

Well, the song was released on a Vanessa album from a few years ago. Here's the album booklet which includes the writing credits. It says "All songs written by Vanessa Carlton except:" and then lists a few co-writes.

No mention of Stevie at all. It seems illegal and also just plain unlikely that Stevie would've written or co-written a song and gone uncredited.

Of course, they may be two totally different things, and it really may just be a cover, but given the theme of this album, I would not be at all surprised if it she did turn out to have a a hand in writing it. We'll know for certain on the 30th, I suppose.
Does anyone have a source for this? I have found no copyrights for this. All I know is that it used to be some mystery demo that started showing up on lists "years ago" but there seem to be no legit sources, nor anyone saying they actually heard the demo. I would love to believe that Stevie gave some or part of her demo to Vanessa, but I don't see Vanessa leaving the Stevie part out of the story. Why wouldn't Stevie want to be credited? Why wouldn't Vanessa say, "and I just couldn't write a song and Stevie Nicks gave me this demo and I wrote another song but kept the chorus"? I definitely want to believe some of this actually came from Stevie's vault, but so far I see nothing that indicates that.

Okay so those are the facts, but how can Stevie's version have a copyright date of 1981? This one is just baffling. And I thought there was a list going around that had Carousel listed as a demo with a date from 1981, but that no one had heard it.

Why is it baffling???

What's baffling to me is that fans are having a hard time grasping that Stevie wrote a song in 1981 titled "Carousel" and then in 2014 covered a different song with the same title( "carousel" ) written by another artist...The fact the 2 songs share the same title is probably just a coincidence...How many songs with the title "Lady" are there???

To me, that part doesn't sound like Stevie at all.

Maybe the first part of the sentence does a bit.

I don't think Stevie had a hand in writing the song.I am sticking with my guess that she loved the song and Vanessa's album but when neither did well in sales or airplay she told Vanessa something along the lines of 'this needs to be heard one day I will record it and put it on my album"

I agree with that, but to me the phrasing at least does.

I understand that, but because these are "songs from the vault, all these songs were written from 1968 til blah blah blah" it makes no mention of a song written in 2011 by a different recording artist. That's all I'm saying though.

I absolutely agree. I also recall Stevie describing how she heard Vanessa's Carousel song for the first time during a Nicks family Christmas gathering, so it is probably very special to her for that reason as well.
