Default Sorceror and its origins...

Hi guyz,

I didnt know where to post this thread, and youll undrestand why if you read this. lol

I love Stevie's "Sorceror" of her TISL album, but noticed that it was from all the way back in 1972! This got me thinking about what the song was written for... Stevie joined FM around about this era didnt she? So is it possible that she composed Sorceror for use on a FM album? I think it would have worked fanastically as an FM song..and i would love to hear FM's take on it as a whole group! I could imagine Lyndsey's vocal harmonies above Stevies on the CHorus "Sooorrccerrrreerrr"

What do you guys think?

Sorceror to me sounds very earthy, and raw...the opening reminds me of a celtic nature tune with the single drum banging away in the background...The lyrics are fantastic "All round black ink darkness...The who found lady from the mountains" Was Stevie ever Pagan? I always wonder.... Its a great tune tho, a bit different.

Stevie says that Sorcerer was written when they moved to Hollywood... and it's just about the scariness of the place. I've heard somewhere that the "sorcerer" was a drug dealer... but I think the sorcerer was actually LA itself. There are early demo's of this song with Lindsey floating around.

Stevie pagan? Well... if you are a strict Christian you would say yes. This doesn't mean she was ever a wiccan (witch) though. She's said over and over she's spiritual, and does believe in God, but she doesn't practice any one religion.

Thanks for that info.....thinking about it, Sorcerer is quite a dark song in terms of its vagueness and lyrics...but i would never have thought it was about Hollywood!!!

It certainly puts a diff perspective on the song now IMO.

CHeers..

The link Downonrodeo appears not to be working. The computer tells me that the site is no longer available!!!

I would love to hear that demo tho!!!!!!!!!!!

in reference to my q about stevie being pagan.....just so I DONT START any friction of... i was not suggesting she was a WITCH...NO! NO! NO! lol I am sure the ledge has seen thousands of witch based threads....

SO, i hope thats cleared that up..

i was referring to her spiritualism more than nething..and nothing wiccan..

Stevie has talked alot in recent times about God, spirituality and praying.... she wears a small gold cross in all the recent pictures and interviews for SYW. many people don't speak publically about their disctinct beliefs, but I can recognize that she is Christian.... o matter what went before..

my band at church plays Beatles, heavy metal faith songs, etc... ya never know..

"We are very blessed. Our music has been the tapestry of so many people's lives. People in their 50s will hear this music and go, 'I want to go back and live in that time.' We are like the Pied Piper. We'll draw them in and lift them up with these songs. I don't care if we don't sell 20 million copies. If we sell 2 million and add a couple of songs to the repertoire people love, that's more important to us."

Hi,

I agree with you about Stevie, and I also have to say, altho i am sure every1 has their own opinions which is wots gr8 about conversation and life..but, i for one have my fingers in many pies when it comes to faith/spirituality/religion. I have never been Christian, as i just cant do it! which is fair enough. I get quite aggitated when as soon as i mention Pagan, ppl think of witches etc...you can have absolutely no connection to witchcraft and be pagan...theres many different forms...you can have you own form! thats wot is the basis of it all, isnt it? Life? lol

Neway...im not going there, cos ill jsut get knotted. lol

Im just saying that Stevie can be wot on earth she likes! like i am! Absolutely Fabulous quote "Eddy Pie Hands...ive got my fingers in alorra pies sweetie" lol

Regardless if Stevie intended it or not, the Sorcerer sounds like a dealer to even non-Stevie fans. My friend heard the song and asked why someone would write a song about their dealer. And the "lady from the mountain" in the song is Stevie.

Fabulous song, though! I love the demo, too. I'm not a fan of the guitar work, but the harmonies make me swoon.

I'm 100% convinced that Sorcerer is about drugs/a drug dealer. Stevie is usually very candid about drug use, and even said that Gold Dust Woman is "a little" about drugs. So I can't really explain why she wouldn't admit this, but c'mon, look at the lyrics! It *has* to be about a drug dealer and being on drugs.

YESSS!!! IT ALL FINALLY CLICKED WITH ME....it HAS to be about drugs..and being totally of ur trolly!

I always seem to hold Stevie with this mystical image in my mind...but sometimes she does sing about pretty low stuff...lol (low-high) hihi...ok bad joke...

Sometimes the premise is mundane..but its her delivery of the songs and harmonies that make it soooo refreshingly raw....

I LOVE Sorcerer , and i love it even more now from realising what it is about..i am too sure it is about drugs.

"Im wild-eyed / I'm thirsty / Show me the high life" <<< Show me the high life could be about falsely believing you are some kind of god whilst on ur trip....and also about just being plain high! Thats wot i love about Stevie, all this ambiguity and ambivalence..

The real clinker for me was "in the middle of a SNOW dream." Honey, it sure don't snow in Hollywood, and there's only one other connotation of snow that I know!
