A rare appearance when they didn't perform live, though they made it look realistic. It was clearly the record track. And the way the song ended shattered the illusion.
Why couldn't they have performed it live? This was probably a European TV show, which sometimes is a factor. 'Freedom' should have been it their set list; Stevie didn't perform any of her new songs from from Behind the Mask on that tour. 'Affairs of the Heart" and 'Freedom' would have been good editions to the set list. Also, it should have featured 'Behind the Mask', and 'When the Sun Goes Down', the latter of which was performed once or twice, then dropped. Billy and Rick must have felt creatively restricted in the band. At least Rick was allowed to perform a few Peter Green tunes. But it was a huge misstep to open the show (with too long of an intro) with 'In the Back of Your Mind', and only playing a portion of it, before breaking into 'The Chain.' That song should have appeared later in the set, in complete form. I saw two show from that tour. And I'm still a little peeved about them. Stevie was okay, but her energy and mood were off, and she should have sung at least one new song. And they give Billy and Rick very little room to capitalize on their talents. Rick is the real deal. Billy is talented too, but I'm not too keen on his front man showmanship.

I liked the album. It was a new sound for them. Adult contmprory/country feel. They also sound like a unified band. Some FWM albums sound like solo albums mashed together.
Anyway, Freedom is a great rocker and I particularly like Christine's vocals high in the mix. Vocals very powerfull! Lyrics kind of WTF but that goes for most of her songs. Haha. I love it though. Who knows what that's supposed to mean, but it sounds so damn cool. You have to interpret her lyrics in your own way i guess. That's one reason why Stevie is magical. I didn't know she didn't play any of the new songs from this album on tour. She likes to do fall from grace and ghosts are gone so I'm surprised she didn't do this one. Affairs of the heart is my favorite song from The Mask. Lyrics are captivating and interesting. I think I know exactly what she's singing about here. For once. Her voice sounds fairly good, she sounds relaxed. Not angry like Freedom, not sad and broken down like When I See you Again (I love that song), the music for Affairs feels soothing too. It complements how she sounds vocally. Some what of an atmospher going on in this mid tempo song. Second Time is probably her worse sung song that she has ever recorded! Voice makes me cring. Too bad the lyrics are sweet. Last edited by gssmith; 07-08-2014 at 03:50 AM.. |

Great song. I like many of Stevie's songs from this period, even if her vocals were far from stellar. Here's my early '90s Stevie/Christine-focused playlist:

I like this song as well. I always wondered who this song was about. I didn't really care for much from that album except In the back of my mind. I don't like Paper doll but I did like No questions asked. There is an outtake that I really like.

I've always liked Freedom. I've been listening to Affairs of the Heart quite a bit lately, it used to be a track I skipped in the past whenever I listened to Behind the Mask.

Freedom is a great song but for me her comatose vocal destroys it. There are some wonderful, angry lines in there that need to be sung with passion and conviction. Unfortunately, she sings the entire song in a indifferent monotone. She can't even muster any feeling for the "look at me with daggers" line. I wonder how she would sing this song now...

I adore Freedom... it's probably the only Behind The Mask track I still listen to. It used to be my angry breakup song.
I especially lovc that high part at the end where she sings: "all the looks that you use on me don't work now that you've fallen!" ![]()

Well this was when she still had a lot more that needed "boosting". After she had the implants out they were still very nice, as I recall during Enchanted tour when she would bend over during Edge Walk they were still very resilient. Then there were the pictures of her on tour in Australia in around 2005?....
These days I think things are saggy and wrinkly more than we want to see. Thank goodness, aint nobody want to see stevies shriveled old prune boobs! I think these reason she is standing so still in this footage is because she will literally FALL OUT OF HER DREESS and have a boob related wardrobe malfunction if she does anything remotely athletic. Klonopin eyes though! Last edited by AnthonyMI; 07-11-2014 at 09:16 AM.. |
