Which Demos Will Make the Cut for the New Solo Record?

Yeah, that was my initial reaction as well. Sadness that she didn't have anything new to share with the world. However, maybe she's just cleaning out all of the old material so she'll have a clean slate of new material to bring to the upcoming Mac album?

Fans have been wanting this, and she has them, so why not do them? It'd be a shame if they were never finished/recorded. And as someone else pointed out, there's always the original demos to listen to if you don't like how they turn out.
I do think she'll alter the vocal range from what they were, and that's ok.

Maybe the new songs are for the new Fleetwood Mac album. If that is so, how can anyone possibly complaint? We are getting the demos plus new songs.

I totally missed the part where the new album is strictly "from the vault". Hm. Works for me, I guess. I don't know her demos all that well so their reworkings never bother me as much as they do some.

It is disappointing in a way that she doesn't seem to be very prolific, but unsurprising. She'd always been very candid about the fact that her writing usually comes from unhappiness and emotional turmoil, and she seems to be very happy and content these days, so... yeah. Oh well.

To answer the question, who knows? Did anyone honestly see Secret Love coming? I do hope there are some demos that aren't known to fandom, though, so we don't see as much bemoaning of the production choices from people.

I've been wondering the same thing. I think we're getting the best of all worlds here, and could not be more excited.

I'm apparently in the minority in that I don't like Joan of Arc. Melodically and lyrically it's kind of a mess that never goes anywhere, to me. "Turn to the wall baby" is even worse than "What's the matter baby" in my book.

I DO like the feel of the FM recording - I love the drums and percussion, and that little sitar-like riff thing. But like I said, can't stand the song itself. So if they could take the instrumentation FM did and expand on that w/ some structural variation and write a different song inside of it...

I've been pretty thrilled with the way all of Stevie's "vaulted" songs have come out (I even really loved the arrangement Lindsey gave "Smile At You"). So luckily I don't have any concerns about this. Though I can certainly understand why some of us might. These demos and outtakes have been as treasured and well-loved by Stevie's fans as her most famous songs are.

When Dave tweeted the pic of him and Waddy at the mixing board, Stevie's "Rhiannon" painting was propped up on the console. So I'm willing to bet you're right about some of those "Rhiannon" demos making their way onto this album!

Side note: someone found out that the version released was the WRONG finished version. The version released was a finished version from Rock a Little, and the one that was SUPPOSED to be released from during Street Angel was not seen or really known about until a couple years ago. Both were great, and very remarkably similar for being recorded so far apart in terms of "pre-Betty" and "near post Klonapin"

I knew it! I knew it! When I heard she was making a solo album I thought it would be a good idea to dig up all her old demos and thought she would. I didn't believe she had enough new material to make a whole new album already and some left for the Mac. Maybe newly written songs and those demos that didn't make the cut will be given to the band. Not that the demos are worthless but just because one producer can't make anything out of one doesn't mean another can't make it great.
I'm not too familiar with the demos. I've seen some on YouTube but never looked into a way to put them on my I pod. I'm sure there is a way but I've got better things to do, as much as I love her. All I know is that Planets, sorcerer, moonlight, and the others that have come out in recent years are great

Not sure dave can beat the FM version of Joan tho.

Not sure she has the range for China Doll's high notes anymore; and Blue Water, while I love what IS there, isn't finished or lyrically full enough for a releasable song. Too repetitive.

Have No Heart is a bit of a guilty pleasure; the version I've heard is very 80's production values and dated but if it were a bit less synth-y it could be great, it could have a vibe not unlike You Can't Fix This but with better lyrics.

Too bad most of her really old demos were just recorded straight onto cassettes; the ones she did in the studio could easily be buffed up ever so slightly and released in demo form. She'd never do that but that would be MY dream… to get great quality versions of the demos themselves.

But Stevie's in such a different place in her life these days. Plus, I hate to even go here... but there's a reason some of these songs never turned up on an album.




Can I take you out back & shoot you yet?

There are demos that I don't like either and about 7 songs I do want made. However, I'm sure Dave will add his creativity into the mix so mabye we will get something special. I'm expecting a lot of songs to turn out better.

I just think Stevie is incredibly generous for doing this. She is doing this for her fans. She is a flawed person like we are all but she does care that gives her fans something back. Makes me think more of her.

That's a good point. Just seems to me like a "forgotten" song that she might want to revisit, but I'm sure you're right that it wouldn't have even been in the running since it has been released.

The Dealer - and basically, repeatedly recorded 17 times... would make me happy.



Also - Gold & Braid - that was never released as a proper studio track, was it? I know the live version is good enough - but still, it was only ever a live recording.
