That said, I trust that they'll all rise to the occasion and bring their best material to the table. I couldn't be more excited about this.

I vote for the EP as bonus track route. Do not want any of those songs on the actual album.

I met Mick Back in 1996 right before the release of Twisted and he gave me the 411 on that track and a dinner the 5 had and how something BIG was coming down the pike. I think Mick clears it with the band before he makes such announcements.

If you'll pardon my quoting you (but you sum up these notions so well verbally), but I can't help thinking this idea (expressed so often) that the songwriters will (or should) bring their "best work" to the new sessions sort of goes in circles and doesn't really resolve. You and I, for example, might hope that Lindsey brings his best songs to the table, and when we hear those songs and think they're the same misfires we've been hearing on his solo albums, we'll be disappointed and say, "He didn't bring his best material in." But these are subjective responses from us, and our conclusions are randomly generated. In Lindsey's eyes, he may be completely convinced that he brought his best material in, and other listeners might think so, too.

You can't really take these statements about "best material" and put them on solid ground—all you can do is hope that the music you hear this year or next year is music you like. I don't think there's a single Fleetwood Mac song that all us listeners are unified in thinking is either a good or a bad song. We have group proclivities where the majority thinks this or that—almost everyone seems to think "One More Night" stinks—but even majority opinion doesn't settle the matter of concluding one song is or isn't the writer's best material. Besides, majority opinion shifts, too—individuals have changed their minds about Say You Will over the years, I've been told. I happen to love "One More Night," and if I'd never heard it before but it was recorded this year, I'd think it was one of the better Fleetwood Mac songs since Danny Kirwan's day, and I'd say with much assurance that Christine had brought in some of her best material (and others would think I was nuts).

You've made an excellent point. "Best material" really is entirely subjective and is going to vary wildly from one fan to another. Each of us, individually, is hoping to thoroughly love the album -- yet there's no way that could collectively happen with such disparate tastes. Ultimately, some of us will love it, some of us will think it has its moments, and some of us will think they embarrassed themselves.

That's what I was trying to get at though, when I told Elle I would rather she take the 5 recorded songs and (Monty Hall) I'd like to have what's in the unseen Box #3, for Fleetwood Mac.

In Lindsey's eyes, I don't think the tracks he has already recorded with John and Mick are his "best." He had a goal for those songs and I don't think the goal was to present his best material. When he toured and introduced Did You Miss Me as the first single, he scoffed at it. It's a song that he seemed to think belonged more to the records executives than to him. Clearly, he was prouder of other material on his new album. True, the songs he likes best may not be the ones that fans like best, but I'd like to think that he thinks his "A" material is on the new album, not his appeasement material.

Not to be flippant, but Lindsey has said this almost every time he has recorded something new in the last couple of decades. But he's not singular in this, of course. There is a saying among songwriters that, "The song I just wrote is my best one."
