![]() Edit: I wanted to add - this is not a bad thing on its own. It's the specific combination of circus polka and Stevie Nicks that is terrible. Two things that should never mix. Ever. I would liken it to Dolly Parton doing scream metal, or Madonna doing super twangy country music, or Justin Bieber covering Edge of Seventeen. Some things just don't go together, and Paper Doll is the offspring of one of those terrible, unnatural combinations.

I have always seen Paper Doll as a kind of goofy novelty song. It is so far out there it is almost a kind of parody.

True, but I've still always been fond of the vocal.

Paper Doll really works for me, but it certainly was kind of an oddball step for the band. I can see why a lot of people don't much care for it. That certainly isn't the kind of sound people normally listen to Stevie Nicks with the hopes of hearing.

I like Paper Doll. I think it's a good song, but it's maybe not the sound of Fleetwood Mac.
For me, it's just like Family Man, or songs like that. They're good, but contrast with other songs, I don't know if I'm talking clear... And, knowing that after its release, Stevie left the band, it' her farewell song, and it gives another meaning maybe. But, I repeat, it's a good song, but not ideal for FM. Regards! |

I love Escape from Berlin. I don't quite know exactly why I do, but it has always appealed to me. And Annabel Lee because, well, Edgar Allen Poe is one of my very favorites. Rock a Little is also a favorite....let's see...and If I Were You I've always just totally adored.
Oh and Blue Lamp is one of my very favorites too.

I really put in the effort to limit myself on this, so I stuck to solo album tracks and came up with:
If I Were You If Anyone Falls Outside the Rain How Still My Love Some Become Strangers Gate and Garden Blue Lamp Lyrically speaking, I couldn't leave these out: I Sing for the Things Imperial Hotel Ghosts For some reason, I view these latter songs and a few others in a group all their own. I think I do this because, reading the lyrics, a side of Stevie is portrayed that differs from a lot of the notions people have about her from what she says in interviews and such. These songs all portray those feelings of doubt, regret, and just genuine fear about her life and the path that she has ultimately chosen. They make it seem as if she believes in the thoughts she doesn't largely put out for the public, that being Stephanie Nicks, aside from the persona of Stevie Nicks, isn't all it's cracked up to be and that fame, wealth, and success are truly not of the utmost importance at the heart of it all. As with her quote in Mick's book, "Sometimes I think I should go back to being a waitress; maybe I would enjoy life more." For me, personally, it invokes a bit of sadness and serves as a reminder to make sure that I will be able to live with the decisions I make for my future. As a young law student, I am fully aware that the career path I have chosen mirrors the path that Stevie chose in that it isn't very conducive to family life, is largely male-dominated, is very demanding and time-consuming, but can be extremely successful and rewarding. Songs like these say to me, "while it may be fantastic and successful and people may think your career path, or even your life, is enviable, there will be nights where you live in doubt and regret and want the exact opposite of all that you have." |

Does anybody know 'See The World Go By' ? It's from some home tape. I really like it and wish there were a finished version (which there may be for all I know under some other title). It runs 2:43 in length, just her and a guitar. Pretty low-fi unfortunately being circa 1974 possibly? Other songs on the tape are titled 'When Will We Love Again', 'Anybody Out There', 'I Need You', and 'Amber.

Yours sounds clearer and louder than my copy of it. I think someone used an EQ or other processing. Thanks!
They were all from a cassette tape recording originally is all I know, just Stevie and a guitar. You even get the sound of the buttons of the machine being pushed. They are from well after Fritz broke-up my source for it said. I have some 1980 demos that include Rose Garden which are much higher-quality and has other musicians involved. So am thinking they could be anywhere between 1974 and 1979. Amazing to have so much together so young as a songwriter! |
