Yes, Stevie was indeed fusty. But I don't agree that the record companies don't have money. They do. They like to throw out all the stastistcs about how much piracy has cost them. But when you ask them just to show their PROFIT margins, profits have actually risen for them. They lost money during the Napster heyday and many small labels went out of business, but there has been a recovery since those bleak times.

WB isn't poor, Stevie.

Oh, I think they have plenty of money. But I don't think they give these huge advances to artists like they used to in the old days. At least, not so freely.... they're not going to invest in you just to give you a chance. You've got to already be a cash cow (or else have the immediate potential of being a cash cow) in order for them to lay any big cards on the table.

This statement is humorous, but shows how out of touch Stevie is with music, today. There are, literally, dozens and dozens of young female artists that are enjoying success, with no pseudo-rap music on their albums and no creepy clothes.

When you do get an advance, it's harder to pay back because of the lack of promotion and radio play.

It all sounds great when you hear you're getting a $2M advance, then you find out your record costs $2.5M to record, and then you pay for videos, and then you pay your tour musicians, your record sells squat and you owe more than you'll ever make with another record.

What digital music sharing exposed was that the record industry was excessive, bloated, and mismanaged. They had to increase the price of CDs to pay far too many useless positions and services. Once they downsized and consolidated operations, everything was fine and the profits went back up. The record industry knows now that it can't get away with charging that much for music anymore.

So how is it for that little girl that’s 22 years old and is as good as me and writes great songs and is really cute and is ready to rock, but can’t support herself?

There’s no record company that’s going to sign her or, if they do sign her, they’re going to change her into a slightly pseudo-rap artist and they’re going to make her wear creepy clothes and make her sing lyrics she hates and tell her she can’t do her own songs. Then her soul is going to die and then what is she going to do?

In a sense Stevie is talking about herself here(as she usually does). In 1991 her record company forced her to record Sometimes It's A Beach. They told her if she didn't work with Jon Bon Jovi her career would be toast.

Did they make her wear creepy clothes?

Well, in 1973 they made her take off her clothes(shirt). In 2003 Lindsey pressured her to wear that granny sweater to suppress her clothes. So yeah.

I just finished reading the entire Relix article. Wow, Stevie comes across as really ignorant and uneducated about technology when she starts ranting about the Internet and piracy. We've all heard her random comments about being an outspoken technophobe, but to see it in print is quite unsettling. Her views about the Internet are just like anyone who doesn't have a clear understanding about something or someone unknown, unfamiliar, or different. Fear and hate take over and they start to dictate how you behave. It's a shame that Stevie looks at the glass half empty on this issue. If she were able to get her head around how the Internet could actually help her sell her new music today, she wouldn't have to be working so hard to promote it herself through touring. Stevie needs to go to the library or the community center like the other seniors and take basic Internet and computing skills.

I emailed the cover photos to my sister. She wrote back, "are they trying to be Buckingham Nicks?" And then I thought, "now that would be a cool idea to have a photo session like that for the release of the buckingham nicks cd."
