Here's an answer: X -- the American punk rock version of Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey/Stevie.

Imagine paying $1000 to hear "Don't Dream It's Over" instead of "Go Your Own Way"

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.

The band makes a series of musically rewarding yet somewhat scattershot records as it tries to find its identity and build a new audience for itself without the former leader. Then, after several trials, comes up with a masterpiece. The masterpiece is followed by other adventurous masterpieces, though the success of the breakout album follows the band everywhere and functions as the standard by with all the band's other musical projects are judged.

By the early 80s the band fragments and reunites periodically across several years. Each reunion is financially successful yet there is an air of nostalgia that permeates its more recent work.
This is very interesting. And funny thing, 'Tusk' and 'The wall' both are double albums that were released in 1979. Buckingham and Waters are somewhat similar.
