Happened to see the Rock Trivia issue of Rolling Stone when I was at the store today, so I flipped through it for a while.

The picture representing the 1970's in the Table of Contents is a picture of Stevie from ~1975. The black and white one where she has short hair and she's kind of looking up at the camera all sad-like.

In the 1970's section there was a question asking who played the percussion parts on Fleetwood Mac's single Tusk, and another question asking which Stevie Nicks song was removed from the Rumours vinyl release at the last second much to her displeasure.

I'll have to check this issue out sometime. Those are pretty good trivia questions, at least for the casual Fleetwood Mac fan.

1. The original Fleetwood Mac was led by guitarist Peter Green, who is widely considered to be one of the best English blues guitarists of all time.

2. Founding member Jeremy Spencer abruptly left the group in 1971 to join the Children of God cult.

3. Guitarist Danny Kirwan left the band after a bizarre episode in which he went flipped out while the band was tuning up, ran into a bathroom, and smashed his head against a wall before destroying his guitar.

4. Christine McVie’s maiden name was actually Christine Perfect, and she released her first solo album in 1970 under that name.

5. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were recruited to join Fleetwood Mac after Mick Fleetwood visited the Sound City recording studio and asked to hear the most recent album recorded there.

6. The classic lineup of Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood, Nicks, Buckingham, Christine and John McVie – was actually the 10th lineup of the band.

7. Christine McVie was not impressed with the first draft of Nicks’ “Dreams,” which went on to become the band’s biggest hit.

8. Mick Fleetwood’s wife, model Jenny Boyd, was having an affair with his best friend and former Mac guitarist Bob Weston through the mid-’70s.

9. Christine McVie wrote “You Make Loving Fun” about her affair with the band’s lighting director, Curry Grant.

12. “Tusk,” the follow-up to “Rumors,” flopped in the marketplace in part because it was priced much higher than other albums at the time – $15.99 for the double vinyl set.

13. Stevie Nicks was sued for plagiarism by a songwriter named Carol Hinton who claimed that “Sara” was very similar to a song that she had submitted to Warner Bros., but backed out when Nicks proved she had demoed the song months earlier.

14. Stevie Nicks wrote “Gypsy” about when she and Buckingham lived together and were totally broke in the early days of their career. They slept on a single mattress on the floor decorated with lace and a flower vase at its side.

15. Nicks’ cocaine habit in the ’70s and ’80s was so bad that she burned a hole in the cartilage of her nose.

16. “Tango in the Night” began as a Lindsey Buckingham solo album.

17. Fleetwood Mac toured through the mid-’90s without Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, or Lindsey Buckingham.

I had never heard number 7 before. I know that Christine has claimed that Dreams is one of her favorite songs to play and sing live.

I believe she called it boring (not surprising, considering it is the same 2-chord progression from start to finish and initially it would have just been Stevie plunking it out on a keyboard). She said that she didn't really come to like it until Lindsey added on the guitar part that kind of wove in and out and answered Stevie's melody.

#18 is dodgy to me... the popularity of Landslide is due to the Smashing Pumpkins version?? Really?? It was a big favorite live, it was played to death off The Dance (wasn't it a single from that??) and then, as for covers, I'd give the Dixie Chicks credit for exposing far, far more people to the song than Billy Corgan and company.

No, Gypsy was written before Robin even got sick. Stevie kind of attributed that meaning to it after the fact in a few of her interviews but that wasn't the inspiration for the song (and in her most recent recalls of what the song is about on the Unleashed tour, Robin wasn't even mentioned).

The Smashing Pumpkins' version came out in 1994, before The Dance or The Dixie Chicks' cover, so it's possible it primed people too young to know Fleetwood tours for those. I don't know if it's more influential than the original though (I personally would say it's more influential than the Chicks' since it predated Fleetwood Mac's single off of "The Dance", and I also think it introduced the song to fans of a genre more different from Stevie's than TDC are).
