Default Hammerstein Ballroom Show

The Washington Post
http://www.washingtonpost.com/entert...e64_story.html

By Associated Press,

Updated: Thursday, February 14, 9:19 AM

NEW YORK — Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters played house band for Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty, Rick Springfield and others at a sold-out concert.

Grohl held an all-star, three-hour-plus show with those rock icons, who performed at the Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Calif., in the late 1960s through the early ‘90s, and are the subjects of Grohl’s just-released directorial debut, the documentary “Sound City.”

Grohl kicked things off with Alain Johannes, yelling after the first song: “It’s going to be a long (expletive) night. You know that, right?”

It was, and the crowd at the Hammerstein Ballroom roared as Lee Ving of Fear, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine and others took the stage.

Grohl played the guitar during most sets, sang background — sometimes lead — and also worked as drummer.

When Nicks, the last of the special guests (or “Sound City Players”) hit the stage, she emerged in all black and in glasses. Her raspy vocals were matched by Grohl on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” He stared at her while she sang; she put her hands in the air.

Each act performed for nearly 25 minutes, and clips of the “Sound City” film played in between their sets. The film explores the then-rusty Sound City Studios where classic albums by Guns ‘n Roses, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Van Halen, Nirvana, REO Speedwagon and others were created.

Wednesday night’s performers are part of the line-up for the film’s soundtrack, “Sound City: Real to Reel,” due out March 12.

“The thing Dave has put together — I’ve never seen anything like it,” Chris Goss yelled when performing with Wilk.

An excited and shirtless Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins played frontman with Nielsen and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic.

“I get to sing Cheap Trick songs with Rich Nielsen. What is going on with my life? I can’t believe this,” the petite rocker said happily as he jumped around onstage.

Springfield performed his classic “Jessie’s Girl,” and Fogerty’s voice sounded clear when he sang six songs, earning loud cheers throughout his set.

But Nicks slowed down the rowdy and rock-filled night with “Landslide.” As she finished the song — and paused — a fan yelled out the last word of the groove to laughs from the crowd.

“Thank you,” she said. “You saved me.”

That band really works for Stevie.....GDW was amazing!!!!!! SDMHA was different than usual....liked the way they ended it. Landslide was great. She looked like she was truly enjoying herself and was very into it!!!!! That being said I do think a few more uptempo songs were needed duing her set. Would love to have seen them do Fall From Grace, Moonlight. That band was so LOUD!!!!! The beginning of the night was reserved for guitar oriented head banging music. When they got to Rick Neilsen the show took an upturn, for me anyway. Rick Springfield was surprisingly good. Fogarty was excellent.

I had the exact same thought! The first 90 mins were hard to get through. Especially with this pack of annoying strange guys near me who felt my personal space (all 3 inches of it) was really their head-banging dance space.

But once Rick Nielsen came on, I was able to enjoy myself and could hear something intelligible coming out of the speakers. Once we got to Fogerty, I forgot all about the long wait, the rude people around me and as each song of his set went on, I knew we were getting closer and closer to Stevie.

I don't know if it was the speakers I was standing near or if my ears had just given out on me, or if she had a slight cold or what, but it sounded like Stevie was singing in some high-pitched tone. Although when I played back her set on the recording I made on my phone, it sounded a lot better, so it probably was me.

But hands down GDW was worth the entire 3.5 hr wait and brought the house down as a closer. Go Stevie!! She needs to bring that type of performance to FM!

And Dave Grohl -- Gotta hand it to a guy who plays guitar and drums nonstop for 3.5 hours straight!

According to someone at the Letterman rehearsal, she does have a cold. I thought I heard it too.

I def think Stevie had a cold. I noticed that in her vocals and speaking voice. She def was using a higher pitch to her singing cause I noticed it also. My feet felt like they were on fire from all that standing as I arrived online at 6pm and never sat back down till the show was over which was at 11:45 or so.

It was amazing.
"Landslide" was so affecting, I welled up like three times.
New song "This Can't Be Fixed" was also very intense.
"Gold Dust Woman" wow... I can't even find the words.
Even rocking a cold, she was so incredible.

And the Rick Springfield set was fun, fun, fun!

John Fogerty, Rick Springfield + Stevie Nicks Rock NYC With Dave Grohl and the ‘Sound City’ Players

by Spencer Kaufman6 hours ago

Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame assembled an all-star cast of musicians for his new documentary ‘Sound City,’ and for the lucky fans in select cities, he has been taking the show on the road with him. Following performances in Park City, Utah, and Los Angeles, the Sound City Players hit New York City for a one-night stand last night (Feb. 13) at Hammerstein Ballroom.

The ‘Sound City’ documentary chronicles the famed Los Angeles studio where such acts as Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Cheap Trick and others have recorded landmark albums. These gigs celebrate the studio, the documentary and the musicians themselves by screening footage from the film in between live sets.

The three-and-a-half-hour concert was highlighted by sets featuring Creedence Clearwater Revival star John Fogerty and Fleetwood Mac chanteuse Stevie Nicks.

Grohl may have been the star of the show, as he played drums or guitar in every set of the night, but the night’s MVP was Fogerty. The CCR legend’s seven-song set was by far the most powerful one of the evening, as he was backed by the entire Foo Fighters band. Fogerty sounded as good as ever on such classics as ‘Born on the Bayou,’ ‘Bad Moon Rising’ and ‘Fortunate Son,’ the last of which he traded verses with Grohl.

Stevie Nicks was the night’s final performer and was also joined onstage by the entire Foo Fighters lineup. While not as energetic as Fogerty’s set, Nicks delivered an emotional and stirring performance. After duetting with Grohl on ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,’ she introduced the next song, ‘You Can’t Fix This.’ The tune was recorded specifically for the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack and deals with the tragic loss of Nicks’ 18-year-old godson at a fraternity party. The Fleetwood Mac singer closed out the night with the classics ‘Dreams,’ ‘Landslide’ and ‘Gold Dust Woman.’

Earlier in the evening, Rick Springfield offered up a five-song set that featured a cover of Sammy Hagar’s ‘I’ve Done Everything for You’ and was highlighted by his infectious hit ‘Jessie’s Girl.’

Right before Springfield’s gig, guitarist Rick Nielsen was joined by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic for a five-song set that was made up of mostly Cheap Trick tunes. In the two previous Sound City shows, Corey Taylor of the bands Slipknot and Stone Sour had taken lead vocals during this set, but due to previous commitments was replaced on this night by Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who struggled to hit the notes on Cheap Trick classics like ‘I Want You To Want Me’ and Surrender.’

The night kicked off with sets by Alain Johannes of Queens of the Stone Age, Chris Goss of Masters of Reality and Lee Ving of Fear, all joined by various members of Foo Fighters. Check out the night’s entire setlist here.

All told, it was a very memorable evening of music in New York City.

Watched Dreams, Landslide and SDMHA before finding out she had a slight cold..and I think it kinda shows in YCFT. I liked it! But just loved the little nuances in the previous show a bit more.

Other than that, anyone pick up on the craziness of her muffled "he will burn you down" at 3:48? More spontaneous and I appreciated that!
