What do you like/not like about the Rumours box set?

Yes. Completely different tracks. I was a little disappointed with the outtakes we got in 2004, as they seemed to not be very different from the actual album cuts.

These new ones blow the previous release out of the water.

I downloaded the iTunes version...the album itself sounds phenomenal on my iPod...the best sounding album I have on there. I haven't "A -B"'ed the outtakes vs the 2004 release to hear the differences.

Not counting the live tracks, the best "outtake" is the version of "Keep Me There" with the ending that they kept for "The Chain". Just sent chills down my spine.

Yeah, yeah, I know my credibility is going to take a hit for bad mouthing Rumours for the last 20 years and then THIS comes along. Sorry, I'm really happy that I sprung for my 6th copy of Rumours, it's still my least favorite Fleetwood Mac album, but I'm really glad they decided to release this set.

Bands ought to just dispense with the 35 year game playing and just release a "Super Deluxe Version" of EVERY album when they first release it. Then we don't have to keep buying new versions every 7-10 years.

I got the Deluxe version of Clapton's Slowhand, too...that's great as well!!! And, it ALSO came out in '77, so I'm in a whole retro mode musically the last few days...Pretty much just like in 1977...got Rumours & Slowhand almost at the same time, then, too!

Agreed...the 2004 release threw me quite a bit. They released "Butter Cookie (Keep Me There)" and it sounded NOTHING like "The Chain" (this, after years and years of how what we know as "The Chain" came from a track they called "Keep Me There"). Glad to have a sort of combined version of the two, and to finally hear what they'd been talking about all these years.

I've been listening on Spotify. The disc of alternate takes is just incredible. NGBA as a duet? Dying over the harmony. Dreams is slightly haunting. Love it.

After a few listens to the new disc of demos/outtakes, I've got some commentary. Largely, this disc is disappointing, in my opinion, when compared to the 2004 disc of outtakes.

Second Hand News: Hhmmnn hhmmnn. That's what it sounds like to me. I have to wonder, really, what the point was in including this track. *

Dreams-Take 2: Um....this really just sounds to me like an alternate, full version, with some of the instruments stripped out to make it sound like a demo. The vocal is nice, but...what else is there? *

Never Going Back Again-Duet: This is amazing! I have no complaints! *****

Go Your Own Way-Early Take: Admittedly, I'm a Stevie fan first and foremost. That said, it's interesting to hear Lindsey's song evolution, alternate lyrics, etc... ****

Songbird-Demo: As stripped down as this song is on the Rumours album, there's not really much to hear in this demo to provide a reference point for what might have been. ***

Songbird-Instrumental: I'm not a fan of instrumentals, in this context. Give me a full album of instrumentals and I'll happily listen to the entire thing, treating it as a separte entiry from the vocals. One song or two songs scattered though a compilation of vocal tracks isn't really a very compelling listening experience. That said, the piano is beautifully played. **

I Don't Want To Know: This track made me smile. Lindsey is eccentric. I wonder if it was considered as a Lindsey-only track at any point in time? ****

Keep Me There-Instrumental: If this weren't The Chain in another life, and if a version with vocals was not included, I'd find this track far more interesting than I do. The inclusion of a version with vocals renders this one redundant. *

The Chain-Demo: This track exemplifies the kind of material I'd expect to here on a disc of demos and outtakes. Lost verses, something that might have been, something that was sacrificed for the greater good. *****

Keep Me There-With Vocal: Another A+ track. More, please! This is the kind of stuff fanboys like myself love *****

Gold Dust Woman-Early Take: Meh. Some interesting sounds, I suppose. A sub-par vocal. I like the breath effects...but there's nothing here to bring me back. *

Oh Daddy-Early Take: Taken on it's own, and given the rarity of Christine McVie demos, this is great. When compared to the outtake from the 2004 reissue, it pales. ***

Silver Springs-Early Take: Um...wtf? Did Stevie vet this at all? Did she really agree to this, or was there a fight that she ultimately los? The vocals aren't even interesting. There's none of that oomph that other outtakes of Silver Springs have. I hear nothing that will make me want to listen to this again. It too sounds like a full version, stripped of some instruments, with a throw-away vocal, and I'd swear a huge ball of snot fell into the back of Stevie's throat at the end. Gross. *

Planets of the Universe: I like this one a whole bunch. This typifies a lot of the frustration I've had with Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie in particular - this track could have made a great b-side, almost as is. Some editing would be required, some cymbals or other percussion, and voila. An epic Fleetwood Mac b-side with a beautiful meandering piano ending. Instead, it wasn't "tight enough" or "produced enough". Guitar flourishes were added, and we got the meandering, lost version that appeared on the 2004 disc of outtakes. *****

Doesn't Anything Last-Duet: Another A+ track. More Stevie & Lindsey duets, please! *****

Never Going Back Again-Instrumental: This is nice, I suppose, but comes off as redundancy when placed on the same CD as a duet version. ***


All in all, there's little here that has repeat listening value, for me. I count six tracks that I'll come back to again and again. The rest will be largely forgettable.

It seems I am in the minority here, with many saying this disc is better than the 2004 disc.

this should have come either printed (expensive) or glued (not expensive) to the outside of the case. Seems cheapo.

I would love to have In Your Dreams on vinyl. Was it ever released in that format? It's nice to see that, despite this digital era, vinyl is making a comeback. I see more and more new records being released on vinyl (albeit more expensive).

And...duh...my issue about the loose back sleeve is not an issue after all; I figured out that I can slip it inside the box. This is why I'm not a rocket scientist.

However I don't like that on the new CD version of Rumours, they tacked on Silver Springs as the last song after Gold Dust Woman. That's poor placement as Gold Dust Woman was and is the perfect ending.

The 2004 Rumours version (with the bonus material) got it right, placing Silver Springs after Songbird and before The Chain.

The DVD version sort of got it right, placing Silver Springs after Go Your Own Way, but then made Songbird the last song after Gold Dust Woman. It's OK, but Gold Dust Woman traditionally should always should be the last song.

What next version of Rumours should we expect? Rumours Live? Rumours Acoustic?

In Your Dreams on vinyl would be amazing. I have noticed that newer vinyl releases don't have the same richness of sound that older vinyl albums have. I'm assuming it's from the difference in recording formats (digital versus analog). I've decided I like vinyl from analog sources better, but that hasn't stoped me from buying new records either, just because I like the format so much. I miss albums having sides.


I was wondering about future Rumours releases also. My guess would be a single live concert recording. By giving us a compilation in this release, they left the door open for a whole concert later down the road.

Or maybe Rumours - Kidz Bop style. Stevie can recruit more children to reinvent their classics.
