Is this a fake?

Despite the seller's claim that "I do not sell fakes", I'm looking for some input from other collectors. There is no catalog number - and he claims it's a U.S. promo, but the U.S. promo came in a standard jewel case, not one of these slim cases. The U.S. promo also has a catalog number....

This is one of the few promo CDs of Stevie's that I am missing, and at this price, it's just right, but I will not buy bootlegs or counterfeits. The counterfeiters are very, very good these days.

It looks real to me too. I agree about the cat number.


But you got to watch those sellers that are selling radio shows of Stevie /Lindsey and FM.

Some that I got were burned copies of the shows.They did not say that they are copies.


They should be truckloads of those IYD promos somewhere.We know radio never played any of them.

That's the thing - it *looks* legit, but I find it unlikely that Warner would release two different CD promos for the U.S. market, and I know the one in the standard jewel case is the real deal...so this one seems suspicious. Back when this item was released, there was someone here warning of fakes, but I can't find the thread.

I'm an active collector of promo CDs and vinyl, and the counterfeits that are out there would amaze most people. Counterfeits usually have no value to collectors, long term, and no one wants to sell a collection later down the road only to find out they have a bunch of fakes.

I totally understand. I recently bought some supposed "promotional" mini-posters for the upcoming movie Oz The Great and Powerful, only to receive some homemade inkjet prints.

You could always ask for a more detailed pic of the disc. If it *is* fake... someone went to great lengths to make it look legit, only to sell it for ten bucks.

He/She does say that it's a radio/event promo so maybe that's why there is no catalog number and on the writing around the edge of the cd it also says that it is the property of Warner Bros/Reprise and must be returned on demand of the record company, so it seems to sound like it's legitimate!! Do all radio promo cd's have a catalog number?

Looks legit to me....but why anyone would want a promo SL single is beyond me. Just not Stevie's finest hour, IMO.

and why on earth would you ever want to sell your collection later?

Looks a little suspicious to me. There is no songwriter credit or run time. If this is for radio they would need to know the run time. Also the "property of record company" thing seems odd. That whole line is not odd, many promo items have a similar phrase, but the ones I have say "Property of Reprise Records....." not just the generic "record company".
I could be wrong but I think it's a fairly well made bootleg. Why would this very rare promo sell for less than the mass produced promo?

Secret Love wasn't great, but as I said earlier, I have nearly all of Stevie's promos - even the dreadful Two Kinds of Love. Secret Love has a picture sleeve, so it's particularly attractive to me as a collector.

I would sell the collection later on for a few reasons; I started collecting Stevie memorabilia when I was 16. I am now 40, and will probably keep collecting until there's nothing new to collect. I have no one to pass it on to who would want it - no kids, or family members who are fans...I mean, really, what am I supposed to do with all of these posters, CDs, clippings, records, books, postcards, photos and flyers 25 years from now when I'm 65? Or later, when I'm 75, if I live that long? Eventually, this will all have to go. ...somewhere. There will come a time when the enjoyment I get from all of it is outweighed by the very real need to downsize my belongings.

KarmaContestant -- my opinion is that it's a fake, for all the reasons you cited (lack of catalog number, different than the other known official promo release, etc).

Additionally, this seller has a listing for the "Secret Love" video on DVD -- with the insistence that he doesn't sell bootlegs or copies. To the absolute best of my knowledge (and I'm pretty OCD about tracking these things down), there is NO promo DVD for the "Secret Love" video.

Yes I have the same feeling about those copies of those radio shows on Ebay.They dont say if its copies or original.

The last deal on Ebay I got the Off The Record with Uncle Joe Benson with Stevie from 2009 which was a copy of the original disc with cue-sheet. It sounds great but I would not pay any thing more then the bid of $15.00 for it which I got it for that much.

People got to be careful with what they see on Ebay and Craig s list or any other online sites.There is alot of people who want to make a fast buck selling fake copies
counterfeits and other garbage to make a fast buck on us Stevie/FM fans.

I'm just teasing....and now recanting, SL was obviously special to Stevie and not a bad tune. Just falls in the vain of Everyday, Maybe Love, etc.

re: your collection. Perhaps RN'R Hall of Fame may be interested or even the corporate Hard Rock Cafe.

I've never been to LA, but it is hard for me to imagine that there is not a Mom and Pop type business or someone in the industry that wouldn't shell out some big bucks for this type of memorabilia.

I think a lot of us are in the same position regarding large collections. I myself have 35 years worth of original radio shows, every album on vinyl and CD (several on cassette as well, even some on reel to reel), all of the guest appearance albums, press kits, promo posters for almost all of the Mac and solo albums, all domestic 7" and 12" singles, imports of singles and albums, promo singles and albums and books, magazines, t-shirts etc.
Most of what I have is boxed up, but someday I will probably have to thin it out. Sounds horrible, but the greatest demand at this point probably won't be until Stevie is no longer with us.

Yes, there are collections that I built up in earlier points in my life that I no longer have any use for now. I don't think any of my stuff is worth much though, because until recently, I never kept anything in mint condition. Nowadays, I will buy things and never open them, but not in the past. But if I could pass this mountain of STUFF onto someone who would get as much out of a thrill of possessing it as I did years ago, that would definitely be something I'd do.

Right now, I still want the FM stuff, but in 10 years that might not be the case.

You know there are things that circulated widely among traders and then things that only one or two people had and when you stumble upon them, it's really exciting.

For instance, I like video more than audio. I think everyone had the same 9 Dance boots (Los Angeles, Uniondale, Pittsburgh, Camden, Rutherford, Moline, St. Louis, NYC and Landover), but then I found a (bad) copy of the Minnesota show on one person's list that no one else seemed to be circulating and I LOVED getting it.

Or the Behind the Mask show. I think we all had Oakland December 6, 1990 but I don't think people were circulating the very last show in Los Angeles, December 7, 1990, and I was able to get it from some random person and it was quite a treasure (although Tear it Up and GYOW weren't on it).

Ebay discourages the sale of bootlegs, for good reason , but as a collector, it would really be great if we could get these largely uncirculated wonders somewhere. It would be the best flea market shopping experience ever. Except for the encounters with fakes. But I think the feedback system helps protect you against that somewhat.
