Default Stevie on Whitney

The new issue of Entertainment Weekly has tributes to stars that passed in 2012. Stevie wrote the piece on Whitney Houston. I'll see if it's online to post (or if anyone else finds it, please also post).

Yes, I have a subscription. It would be a lot to transcribe, but Stevie talks about meeting her briefly when she was walking into a hotel and Whitney and Bobby were walking out, and they both had their Yorkies with them, so it was kind of a bonding moment. She said they seemed much happier and more together than they did on their reality show.

I'm a little surprised they chose Stevie to do the tribute, but it's a very sweet article.

Thank you for posting that.

I agree that I am surprised that they chose Stevie.

However, I saw the piece where Prince did Dick Clark and Prince really seemed to know Clark best from Prince's appearance on the Bandstand show. He wasn't a personal friend of Clark's. So maybe they wanted to get a perspective from people who only had incidental contact with the deceased. Maybe they didn't want someone who truly knew Whitney like Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin or Clive Davis because they wanted that outside view from a person who didn't really know them any better than the fans did, only that person happened to be a celebrity.

If one more page can be uploaded, the Editor's Note talks about these tributes, and Stevie is mentioned there too. The Editor liked the fact that their shared moment was over their dogs and not the fact that they are both musical legends. I suppose it is somehow more humanizing, something lots of people can relate to, since most of us don't know what it's like to run in the same circles with Whitney or Stevie.

Two things stood out to me in Stevie's comments. She obviously has no recollection of this:

And, she sounded like Bobby Brown was to blame for Whitney's addiction problem. Interesting coming from someone who should know your addiction is not someone else's fault. (Not that it helps living with another addict.)

Yeah the first thing I thought of when she said she had only met Whitney once was this pic from Billboard in 1988 when they were on the UK leg of touring behind Tango.

I think its fairly safe to say that Stevie doesn't remember much of anything from '88-93.

It was a very good article written by Stevie on Whitney Houston.

I agree. Brown might not have been good for Whitney just as Stevie says she and Joe should not have been together when they were both addicts. But the suggestion that Brown led Whitney astray and caused her problems is a wrong one. Michele

Fair or not, I think most people thought he was draggin her down. Her image was more classy and sqeaky clean. He had is issues before they got together, and after they got together they both became crackheads. Obviously we all have to take personal responsibility, but that is the impression of the general public.
