Default Rhiannon on "Behind The Music"

Hello everybody!

My name's Cliff and i'm new here! I've been a big FM fan for over a year now and very happy to have found your very interesting message board!

I wonder if anybody can help me with that question: A couple of days ago i came across an interesting "Behind the Music" documentary on youtube. What struck me enormously was that they included a short snippet of a live version of Rhiannon i'd never seen before (if you click the link, it is around minute 8:18).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTL6DKNZ5Gw

Does anybody know if there is a way to watch the complete footage of that gig and that particular performance of Rhiannon (i can't find it anywhere on youtube)?

Interestingly, the full performance of I'm So Afraid of the same concert (youtube says it was at the University of California, Santa Barbara Football Field, May 1976) seems to be available:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJyzijG0I0k

If someone knows anything i'd be very grateful...

Greetings from Germany!

Hi Cliff

I think the Rhiannon you speak of in that clip in Behind the Music is from the 1976 Midnight Special performance. Look at up and see how it compares.

Hope that helps!

Hey Morgana, thanks for your answer!

I think i'm familiar with the Midnight Special version of Rhiannon, if it's this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c3MsSdt9JQ

What I am looking for is the performance which can be seen roughly between 8:18 and 9:00 minutes in the following sequence of Behind the Music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTL6DKNZ5Gw

In this one they play outdoors and at daytime and i would totally dig to see a complete recording of it somewhere.

Any ideas...?

Hey Stormwind!

Yeah, i also have the impression that I'm So Afraid is the only full performance from that concert available on youtube...

Do you (or anybody else) know if there is complete and uncut footage of that Rosebud gig available? And if yes, how could i get my hands on it?

I just love the raw 70ies performances of FM and to me Rhiannon always was the total highlight of those shows, so i was totally blown away when i came across the (to me) unknown material on "Behind the Music".

Many greetings!

The clip you see on Behind the Music of Rhiannon from that outdoor show is pretty much the only footage you'll see. I have never seen or heard of anything more than that. There is also a clip of Over My Head from that same outdoor concert that they showed on the old Disney channel's Going Home special back in 1993.

The whole concert exists in a vault somewhere and I think Ken Caillat goes into some detail about the Rosebud film in his book. I haven't read it yet but a friend read parts of it to me. From my sketchy memory, they filmed that outdoor show at UC Santa Barbara for the purpose of using it for promos but decided to shoot indoors at a soundstage where they could take their time and do several takes of the songs if they needed to. If I recall, they shot You Make Loving Fun 4 times - each one was different. I think Ken also says the outdoor concert was near a military field or airport or something and they had issues with planes flying over head and getting mixed in with the audio. Something to that effect.

Hey Joe!

Thanks for your answer, i kind of expected something like this...

I already read Making Rumours a couple of weeks ago and just did some research to refresh my memory: In the beginning of May 1976 FM played a concert at Santa Barbara football stadium. Judging from the I'm So Afraid clip on youtube (which names the same location) and the description in the book (which includes among other things hot weather and noises coming from an airbase or the like) the Rhiannon clip on "Behind the Music" should be the one from that particular concert.

Caillat says, that the Santa Barbara show had completely been recorded on film, but didn't really elaborate on it. Instead, the following chapter 9 ("I quit", p. 193) begins with his memories of a filming session FM did on May 11th, 1976, on Studio Instrument Rental's (SIR) rehearsal stage (near Wally Heider's studio in L.A.). The record company wanted live footage of the band for promotional purposes and as i understand from the text, You Make Loving Fun, Go Your Own Way and Rhiannon had been filmed that day (without audience).

I strongly subject that these are the three famous clips which are now commonly linked to the TV show "The Old Grey Whistle Test".

Considering the Santa Barbara footage, you are probably right, Joe: Caillat in his book clearly indicated that SOMEWHERE (the vault you spoke of) the footage still exists. Caillat at one point even says this: "When i watch it now, i can see that Go Your Own Way didn't have the end solo that it has on the album, because it hadn't been invented yet." (Making Rumours, p. 190) To me this means Caillat must know WHERE the vault is and even has access to it...

Maybe we should start a petition asking Caillat/Warner/whoever to open up this treasure for an interested public...

Check out the other thread in Rumours about the MOJO Jan 2013 magazine. Apparently (another) re-release of Rumours and outtakes will be accompanied with a DVD of Rosebud. Which will be well worth it for this 'in the vault' never before seen footage!
