Ann & Nancy Couldn't Match Stevie's Intake

I don't know whether Stevie's mad at the Wilsons or not. But why does everyone keep dredging up a magazine headline from a quarter-century ago? Does the fact that Rolling Stone wrote a headline for Heart, calling them "Rock's hottest sister act," mean anything more than marketing razzmatazz? Don't the magazine's editors write a headline for every cover? Is it meant to be taken quite so literally as an eternal credo? Rolling Stone called 50 Cent "the king of hip-hop." They called Jennifer Lawrence "America's kick-ass sweetheart." They called Lady Gaga "monster goddess." They called Snoop Dogg "America's most lovable pimp." They called Lil Wayne "rap's genius." Don't you guys recognize headline language when you see it? If you want to appreciate Stevie's poetry, you can't be oblivious to the various guises of rhetoric.

Besides, I always knew the Nicks headline was a kind of double-entendre. The full headline (to remind everyone) was "Out There With Stevie Nicks: The Reigning Queen of Rock & Roll and Her Magic Kingdom." The subtext is that Stevie is alluring, regal, and wicked-cool, but also a space cadet. That's what's meant by "Out There" (and by the Timothy White article itself, which talks about Stevie spending her time in Neverland, bringing along a pup tent, and how she lets the metaphors of fairy tales overtake her real life). She's the Queen of Rock & Roll, but she's the queen of a "magic kingdom," a fairy tale, an illusion.
