That would be great if Dolly recorded After the Glitter Fades. It would of been a hit. Quote:

I've never heard that Dolly has ever mentioned Stevie's name...interesting...I like the idea of a Dolly cover of After the Glitter Fades. I remember in the 80ties Boy George was asked his two favorite singers...Dolly & Stevie

Agreed Michele. Dolly writes very simply and fairly literally. Beautiful songs, but nothing compared to what Stevie does. That's coming from a major Dolly freak by the way.
My mom has been obsessed with Stevie since before I was born, and Dolly was my childhood idol. So we've had many a discussion about these two over dinner. I maintain that Stevie's one of the greatest female songwriters of all time. The woman's a poet! ![]() |

Also, I will say with Dolly that to the extent that her songs have depth, her high voice doesn't exactly do them justice. She sings shrill and fast, so that any sentiment the song might leave flies away on airy wings for me.
I think Dolly's songs, when she sings them, are mostly fun, but not deep. Now with Reba McEntire, I don't think her songs necessarily have more substance than Dolly's, but just the timbre of her voice makes me think about the words more. Heck, I think about Fancy and compared her to Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie in my head. I don't think Dolly singing the same song would have sparked such pathos. There are exceptions, but I don't think her lyrics can match Stevie's overall, but I don't think her voice would do them justice, if they did. Of course, she's lucky that other people sing her songs as well. Michele Last edited by michelej1; 09-09-2012 at 05:28 PM.. |
