I agree with you on Steve Earle's most recent stuff. My favourite albums from him are his first six. They're all great but from then on it got a bit messy. Still some great stuff but all a bit random and yes, moody and self-serving.

Of course Garth isn't country. He's country pop (and bad country pop at that) in the extreme. That's why I only listen to a couple of his songs. I avoided him completely for years because he just p***ed me off but damnit, a couple of them wormed their way into my collection.

As for Clint Black I don;t know much but the few songs I do know I like. The rest of his stuff may suck though, who knows? Hey, it could be worse - I could have listed Alan Jackson or Toby Keith!

Glad to see some love for the Dixie Chicks! Say what you want about everything else that swirled around them a while ago, they can play and whoa... Natalie can sing! All their albums are great and they're top of my list of bands I still need to see live. Loved them for years.

I meant to add Sara Evans (despite her most recent, terrible album, Allison Moorer and Shelby Lynne to my list too.
Dwight IS homage to the Bakersfield sound, which was in direct defiance to Nashville's 1960 "orchestral sounds". Hard, straight country. The way the good lard intended!

At this moment of thought....Dwight, and The Chicks, are really the only current artists(with hits) that I consider to be truly country(and yeah, most of their hits are from several years back). I mean, I love Dierks, but he ain't country!

Alan Jackson is okay, his music anyway. He's not much of a singer, though. He's Bob Welch, talking his way through songs. I'm a melody ADDICT. Sing to me, don't talk to me.

I've never seen the Chicks either. I'd love to. I don't think Natalie has much interest in "conquering the world" anymore. Meaning smaller tours...
