The Boston Herald, July 10, 2010

Last best show: Stevie Nicks at the Pavilion

Every rock list is front-loaded with dudes. The Beatles are always named the best band. Bob Dylan is the best songwriter. Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist. All this male dominance, makes Stevie Nicks’ glory even greater.

And after her stunning show last night at the Bank of American Pavilion, it’s time to give Nicks her due and bump her up a few notches on these lists.

No. 98 on “Rolling Stones’” list of Greatest Singers? Even at age 64, she’s better than that. Her power and range have diminished with age and overuse (her opening cover of “Rock and Roll” wasn’t up to Led Zeppelin standards, hey, neither is Robert Plant in 2012), but Nicks has one of the all-time killer sets of pipes. On the classic “Stand Back” she roared like the Golden God; her take on “Landslide” remained as awesome as ever.

Revised rank: No 36 — right between Bruce Springsteen, the current 36, and Dusty Springfield at 35.

Nicks was stupidly bundled as Fleetwood Mac with Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie at No. 83 on “Paste’s” list of Greatest Living Songwriters. Did the editors forget “Bella Donna?” Did they — like everyone else — not listen to last year’s surprisingly-great “In Your Dreams?” Thankfully, Nicks remembered the choice cuts from “Dreams” including “Secret Love” with its wonderful melody and shimmering arrangement and the big, bad rock riff of “Ghost Are Gone.”

Revised rank: No. 59 (which pushes her above Conor Oberst and Jack White but not past Sly Stone or Dolly Parton).

Nicks didn’t make “Rolling Stone’s” 100 Greatest Artists and that makes sense. But Fleetwood Mac missed the list too. This is insanity. Last night Nicks only did four Fleetwood Mac songs including standout “Gold Dust Dreams.” Not only was her voice spot on for the tune but when she delivered the lyrics with that still-wild rasp it was awesome. Find me a better, truer rock lyric than “Rulers make bad lovers/You better put your kingdom up for sale.” Add in “Rhiannon,” which she did brilliantly, and it’s enough to make the Top 100.

Revised rank for Fleetwood Mac: No. 82 replacing James Taylor (sorry, local lovers of James).

There were flaws at last night’s packed show, but they were flaws every great, aging rock act is guilty of: a balding back up band, too much self importance, too much false grandeur. Besides, these flaws are what rock fans love (see: Iron Maiden’s last best show).

Nicks proved again that she’s rock’s Golden Goddess: Top five when it comes to tambourine work, tied for first with Steven Tyler in the scarves, sashes, frills and feathers category, and No. 1 in on stage twirling.

A note on opener Marc Cohn: I freely admit Cohn has a definitively adult contemporary voice. I’ll also allow “Walking in Memphis” is cornball to the core. But I still kinda dig the tune and love that after everything he’s been through, that he still crushes his signature song live. Also, why have him open and not duet with Stevie on “Leather & Lace,” right?

It was an amazing show, I'll post a full review later, but just a few comments.

Stevie told the story about a soldier she used to visit who was "touch and go" when she met him, he then walked out on stage with his family. It was so touching, got very choked up.

Stand Back ROCKED, did some fast twirls!

Edge of Seventeen was a nightmare, security was horrible, did manage a handshake though.

Looked like a full house, it was awesome!

I had a great time at the show! And it was amazing to meet everyone...Especially Danielle =P I took Ashley with me to the show....Shes been a closet Stevie fan for awhile and she finally wanted to go...and she said she LOVED it and now wants to go to the Mohegan show lol Ashley said Stevie is WAY better in concert and sounds like the songs on the albums....

Stevie was very energetic during the show and sounded awesome...She did the high notes and twirled and high kicked and tambo'ed the **** out of the tamborine lol The pictures I took at the show were okay since they were with my iphone....my cvamera takes crappy pics too...

a highlight was Soilders Angel....after she sang it she had Vincet and his family come on stage and it was so amazing and touching....Stevie kept huigging him and kissing him and he said that Stevie was her best friend <3 So friggin cute! Gave me chills! After they got off stage I realized they were in the same row as us...9th row

A picture of Stevie and Vincet

It was a great show. So emotional when Stevie brought out Vincent. I thought the venue was good too, I had never seen a show there before. I did have a super tall guy in front of me, but he seemed to be mainly there for the purpose of babysitting his very drunk girlfriend, so he sat down most of the time. I thought Stevie sounded great. Gold Dust Woman and Love Is were the stand outs for me.

This show was great.I was in tears when she brought out Vincent and his family. This make me so proud of Stevie with her helping hands.Which was the highlite of the show.Again security did not care about photo taking.I did hear the announcement about "No Flash photography".I thing not alot of people are waking up to not having the flash turned on.

Stevie was on fire.So was Waddy and the band.

Again It was great to meet up with all of you Ledgies at the show. Now after going to Stevie/FM for over 30 years by myself I have some friends to have fun and chat with at the show.

So now off to the Mohegan Sun on my little Stevie tour.Seeya there....

Nicks seamlessly weaves old and new

The twirls may be a little slower these days, but the spirit remains strong.

Tuesday night at the Bank of America Pavilion, Stevie Nicks enchanted with a two-hour set that was part “Storytellers,” part patriotic tribute, part crystal visions, and all heart.

The show was heavy on tracks from her latest album, 2011’s splendid “In Your Dreams,” which may have been unfamiliar to some in the packed house, but Nicks was a savvy sorceress of sequencing.

The Fleetwood Mac chanteuse wisely prefaced new tunes with stories about their origins to provide a way in and alternated fresh tracks with big hits, engendering good will.

That meant that Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” — still retaining its warm, woozy charm — flowed nicely into “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream)” — which Nicks explained began life in the early ’70s and was resurrected when she was inspired by the second “Twilight” film — which then segued easily into a churning, spectral, wailing “Gold Dust Woman.”

That tune was followed by Nicks’s reverie “Soldier’s Angel,” inspired by her trips to visit injured soldiers. Nicks brought one such soldier named Vincent, who managed a miraculous recovery, onstage with his family for a poignant and rousing ovation.

She pivoted back into rocking action with “Stand Back.” Backed by an airtight eight-piece band, including longtime guitar foil-musical director Waddy Wachtel and indispensable backing vocalists Sharon Celani and Lori Perry, Nicks was in high spirits all night, bouncing from the Mac catalog to her solo repertoire and a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.”

Declaring that she would never do another strictly “greatest hits” tour, Nicks was clearly jazzed to be playing new material. That sense of reinvigoration permeated the whole set, and because the performances were so strong — from a tender “Landslide” to the lilting new tune “For What It’s Worth” to a muscular “Edge of Seventeen” — she had the audience eating out of her sparkly, fingerless-gloved hand.

Smoky-voiced opener Marc Cohn warmed up the crowd with hits like “Walking in Memphis” and a touching tribute to the late Levon Helm, “Listening to Levon.”
