Default Sheryl Crow Has Benign Brain Tumor

The Associated Press, Tuesday, June 5, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -- Sheryl Crow revealed that she has a benign brain tumor, but her rep says it's nothing to be alarmed about.

The 50-year-old told an audience about her condition at a recent concert, but her representative, Christine Wolff, said it's very common.

The tumor is a meningioma, and it's typically benign and develops from the protective linings of the brain and spinal cord.

Wolff said that Crow is doing great and is healthy and happy.

Crow battled breast cancer several years back. She's currently on a nationwide tour.

Q. Crow, 50, says she had an MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, after she had memory problems. Why would a brain tumor cause memory problems?

A. That is definitely the kind of symptom that could be caused by this type of tumor. Generally a tumor that affects memory would be located in the left frontal lobe of the brain.

Q. Do these tumors always cause memory problems?

A. No. The brain is like real estate. It's all location, location, location. We have the brain pretty well mapped out. What symptom you have is based on what part of the brain the tumor is arising from.

Q. Crow has said she doesn't plan to have surgery. Can you live with a tumor like this?

A. A lot of times, these things don't become symptomatic in your lifetime. We find them more now because we are looking for them. Here in New York, there is an MRI machine on every corner. But if it's not causing symptoms, we leave it alone. Or you could do surveillance for six months, and repeat the MRI. A lot of meningiomas don't grow.

Gosh darn it all! Healing wishes, prayers and nothing but good thoughts for Sheryl. Hope all goes well for her. Don't want to see this turn into anything serious.

Nothing promotes and sells concert tickets faster than a brain tumor (benign).

I know there has been alot of Sheryl hate on here in that past but that is just harsh.

I certainly don't want to pile onto Sheryl because I have actually enjoyed all of her albums until the last few...

That being said, there really isn't any reason for her to publicize her latest malady. It wasn't preventable. It's not fatal. It's inoperable/untreatable. All they can do is watch and wait to see if it worsens. So it isn't like she is raising awareness about a disease that people can do something to prevent. Okay... so she's forgetting some lyrics on stage. She should just get a teleprompter and move on! Or perhaps this is a way of indirectly explaining why her last few albums were occasionally unlistenable? This is as unnecessary as Stevie announcing to the world that she has a dime-sized hole in her septum, although at least in that case, it would actually potentially raise the public's awareness about the ancillary damages of prolonged cocaine abuse. In Sheryl's case (although I do feel terribly for her), I think she should have kept this private.

I disagree. I don't think there's any reason it had to be made public, for the reasons you listed, but nor do I think there's an reason it should have been kept private.

It is the sort of thing one would likely explain to family and friends, since there's memory loss involved. And because she's a celebrity, it would have been leaked eventually. This way, she gets to control the news.

Cool Wish her best of luck...

since I still suffer from the arachnoid cyst in my right temporal lobe (A benign tumor). May she have a full recovery.

Reality is harsh. I was not trying to be harsh, just being real. Sheryl also joined Fleetwood Mac without telling the band, remember? She plays the media, always has.
