Default Stevie The Writer

Hey all. It's recently come to my attention that Stevie has written some songs for other artists back in her glory days, which is pretty cool - the woman is accomplished! I know that Louise Goffin (god save me from that high pitched squeal) got her hands on "If you ever did believe" for an album in 1981.

Has anybody ever compiled a list of songs Stevie wrote for others? Imagine how cool that would be if one day somebody compiled an album of others' recordings of tunes she wrote - kinda like a Stevie Nicks The Songwriter Retrospective.

Some of the songs that others have covered were not specifically written for them. The ones I'm aware of that were are Leather and Lace for Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter and "You're Not the One' for Sheryl Crow.

One of my all-time favorites is "Sorcerer" recorded by Marilyn Martin and produced by Jimmy Iovine. Some delicious Roy Bittan piano on that one! It's a shame that Stevie didn't record her own version with Jimmy and that spectacular band.

Legend has it that After The Glitter Fades was written for and sent to Dolly Parton, but Dolly never recorded it.

Totally agree. I love the piano-based original version. I wish Stevie would have done that for TISL.

It does sound nice, but Sorcerer's rightful place would've been on the White Fleetwood Mac album just before I'm So Afraid

Wasn't it Laurie Sargent who actually did that song????

I know there is a great, as you mentioned, Marilyn Martin version as well!!! Stevie is doing back-up vocals on Marilyn's version too!! Here's Marilyn's version:

I think this is Laurie's version: http://youtu.be/pqiv8G0c42g

I hope Stevie will add "Sorcerer" back into the setlist on this upcoming tour.

Laurie's version was played on film (Streets Of Fire) during a performance scene. Completely different arrangement, more acoustic guitars than the Marilyn Martin soundtrack version. I bet Stevie & Jimmy intervened and said they wanted Marilyn's version on the soundtrack, because Stevie was fast friends with Marilyn & stole her from Joe, plus they were intending on launching Marilyn Martin as a solo act on Modern. More exposure!

But I completely agree. The MM (Streets Of Fire soundtrack) arrangement is killer, and it's basically Stevie's BD & WH session players on the track. This is what "Sorcerer" would have sounded like had Stevie recorded & sang the lead during this era. I prefer the piano driven moody & mystical arrangement over Sheryl Crows version any day!
