Actually, he'd hate it and I'd venture to guess that the scenario you suggest above would go over like a lead balloon. Lindsey is probably the most "over" FM than anyone else in the band. Why would he care about re-inventing it? As someone else pointed out, their days of re-inventing themselves with new band members are over. They're too old and it's too late in the day.

Here are some facts: I don't especially like Lou Reed, so you can say what you like about him. You will not find anything in any of my posts about Lou Reed that praises his work, only the hypothesis he has historically been more willing to eschew what is commercially safe and lucrative than Lindsey Buckingham has. I chose Lou because he came to mind, is all. This is all an argument of degree, not perfection. As for being 'edgy', I said that about LB, not Lou Reed. You're an intelligent person, Hejira. You knew that. |

Despite the fact that some people think he'd not want to do it without Stevie, I think he'd jump at the chance if the right opportunity presented itself. Lindsey's biggest problem in the band and the most issues that he has had to face have been with Stevie. The days of re-inventing themselves are never over. That is in their mind not the actual reality. Sure the name Fleetwood Mac might be old and dead but there are many artists who have been very popular until they are much older than the current members of Fleetwood Mac. Those guys can still play, they can still put on a show, and Lindsey is probably the most creative person to come out of the band since Peter Green. They just need to find the right vehicle to bring their message to the masses. The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band almost got it right, especially when John was supposed to be there at the beginning. Now take out Rick, put in Lindsey and change the musical style to something else other than blues, and you could actually make a success of it. Oh and I'm not suggesting that they are going to top the charts, or sell millions of albums, but a good solid fan base is already there and they could make a good solid income out of it if they made the effort. EDIT Oh and forgot to address the "link to the past" bit. I'm not suggesting anything other than his name can still bring in the fans, etc. You would pay to see Lindsey Buckingham because of who he is. You wouldn't pay to see Jenni Green (made up name) on her own, but you might if she was appearing with Lindsey. ![]()

I also want to touch on the "outside producer" idea that band members and fans bring up. One of you guys posted a print interview recently in which Lindsey clarified what I've been saying: an outside producer wouldn't necessarily be someone who orchestrates the tracks. Lindsey doesn't intend to come into the studio, lay down his guitar & vocal tracks on command, and then go home, while someone else does all the painstaking track work (including mixing). That will never happen. So the outside producer won't prevent the musical disagreements between Stevie and Lindsey. The producer would be there mainly to serve as a go-between: as the guy who keeps meetings on track, who keeps budgets on track, who keeps schedules on track, and who oversees business decisions. He's not going to tell Lindsey what sort of effects to put on Stevie's vocal. Lindsey is going to continue to flange or phase her lead vocal, which will in turn lead to the same fights we've seen in every previous decade.
