I don't think of Lindsey as much of a best friend. If she said, "sometimes he's my lover, even when he's not around," I'd tend to think more of Lindsey. Lover, husband, partner, menace, dragon, demon . . . any of those words I'd think of him.

Without a musical context, I think it's a good description in that it puts me in mind of yowling. Tom's voice does that and I don't mean that in a perjorative sense either, though I realize it's a description that is not entirely flattering to Petty.

From a musically historical perspective, I think it generally refers to someone who sounds more soulful than Tom does, though. Maybe that's what Stevie was going for.

Yeh, if I had described him that way, I would have meant that his voice had a flat howling dog quality. Stevie may have meant that his voice is a little bluesy.
