Default Amphitheatres- Love 'em or Hate 'em?

Through some though the other day, I realized that my best concert experiences have been at amphitheatres. I wanted to see what you felt about them as well. I've FM/Stevie concerts at three of these venues, the now defunct Starwood in TN, Verizon Wireless in Alpharetta, Georgia, and most recently the PNC Pavillion in Cincy. LOVE THEM!

I don't think you can judge the venue as a whole that easily. It depends on the act and the overall show. Some shows are well suited to smaller venues (Lindsey Buckingham, for example), but some just couldn't come alive as much without the ampitheatre atmosphere (Such as R.E.M).

I Like Amphitheaters!! because there just cool and everything comes alive!

Lindsey does well in smaller venues, I dont see him doing amphitheaters! Stevie Nicks and Grace Slick needs Amphitheatres because they have louder voices and there voices can flow through the Amphitheaters lol!

It's not about louder voices at all. It's about the presence of the music as a whole. Volume can be adjusted. Once a song is out there you can't decrease the "bigness" (for want of a better word) without changing the song's impact.

For example, let's take something tediously platitudinous. Bohemian Rhapsody. That is a full bodied song when it gets going. You can't place that in a small venue with velvet curtains, five seat rows and sheltered acoustics. That kind of song needs to reach the heavens. Whereas somebody like James Taylor or Gordon Lightfoot with their heavily acoustic and guitar reliant music couldn't fill the space provided with presence.

There should be a "Performer Dependent" option on the poll.

Who mentioned equipment? You're not understanding me, at all. It's not as simple as a vocal or a piece of equipment. If the songs haven't been written to fill the venue with atmosphere and presence, then it's not meant to be performed in said venue.

I love Amphitheatres. Nothing like watching a so-called soldier get ripped limb from limb by a lion!

Well that's taking an overly simplistic view to rock. Want me to go tell Acoustic Rock, Soft Rock and Protopunk to go home then?

Good luck with that.
