Oh, I hate that too. My niece does that every time she sits me down at a piano to play it so she can sing it. She only knows the Dixie Chicks--really had no idea about the Fleetwood Mac connection--so that's the rendition she thinks of as the authentic one.

Of course, Stevie was older than 19 or 20 when she wrote and then recorded it. Still she was young and had not had that many life experiences herself (not compared to what was to come). I was always impressed with the age-old wisdom in her voice and phrasing inflections in those earliest years.

The song had a maturity a generation beyond her years then, in one sense. In another, I think it is a song handmade for a young person, breaking old ties and restrictions, venturing out on a search for independence for the first time.

I love Landslide. I never tire of Stevie singing it.
I'm happy other people sing it, good or bad, because they must love it too! I'll admit I don't always want to listen to the other versions!
I think Landslide is one of Stevie's masterpieces.

If anyone's interesting in reading the paper I wrote on Landslide, I've uploaded it. The prompt for the paper was something along the lines of: Choose a text anddemonstrate how it is emblematic of the human experience through a close reading of the text. So it's basically just a 3.5 or so page analysis of it.

Keep in mind that since it was for school, it probably sounds overly pretentious, has a cheesy title and annoying introduction paragraph, includes stuff like "the speaker," "Nicks," " her lover," etc because per the instructions of the teacher, I had to treat Stevie as a poet and wasn't allowed to assume that the speaker was the author etc. I also basically had to pretend that I knew nothing about the actual story behind it, and divulge everything I wrote purely from the text itself (because everything i said had to be backed up by the text so my teacher could see where I was getting it from).. in other words, I had to sort of generalize it all.

It might seem for us that "Landslide" is a bit cliche because we are aware that Stevie has written so many unforgettable songs that sadly are ignored by the mass public. I can name at least ten other songs that are in my opinion way better than overplayed and overhyped "Landslide". On the other hand, if this song serves as another brick in the Stevie's legend wall then I'm not against it. Let legacy continue! Even with 1.000.000 th contestant of American Idol singing this old tune

I don't think I could. To me, "Landslide" is a top-notch example of structural strength, effective brevity, beautiful melodic hook, & memorable wordsmithing. The themes of growing older & reflecting back seem to connect with a lot of people.

Look closely at the melodic line in the chorus: its path--an ascent with three switchbacks (the third of which falls twice), followed by a descent that is almost the ascent in reverse--is a cool little representation of the words ("climb a mountain and turn around").

It's details like that which probably indicate that Stevie put a heck of a lot of thought into this one.

^ To be honest, I think those things are unintentional on Stevie's part (which makes it all the more beautiful as a piece of art, imo), at least, as far as the melodic line and all. Didn't Stevie say she wrote it in like 10 minutes or something, the words and music all at once?

Excellent paper, WildHearted! I have to admit there were some explanations you gave for lines that I never considered and they make perfect sense.

Thanks you guys!

Glad that there was an interpretation or two maybe different from your own. That's the great thing about Stevie's songs (and poems and music and writing in general) - it's all subjective!
