In recent times big stars of the past (exept for Madonna and U2) don't sell out their concerts like they used to in their prime. I read somewhere that Janet Jackson (once very popular touring artist) had to scale down the capacity of her performances to theaters and small arenas due to poor ticket sales. We should be glad that Stevie doesn't care about ticket sales and walks on the stage no matter if the arena is half empty or close to being sold out.

It's really all about the ticket prices and promoters who want to squeeze the maximum amount of profit out of every concert. Obviously smaller concerts with big ticket prices = lower overhead, bigger margin. Ultimately this works to the detriment of the artist since many casual fans will be reluctant to shell out that kind of money to see someone they are only vaguely familiar with. I'm sure if promoters had their way, they would book Stevie into a hotel conference room and charge attendees $15,000 per ticket.
