It's funny though, how her voice seems so different now than from her younger voice but it's really just a matter of the register she's speaking in - when you raise the pitch of her current voice it sounds just like her younger one.

Like so many of us I have lost favorite specific songs...
Maybe Mike Bide would know... I had a full take of Sara, Cleaning Lady...there is no middle part torn out of her session. All I can find is. The Tusk re release...or the one where her ad libs are ripped out obviously...you can hear her vocals cut of and BANG the song is ending. Also Storms with just a guide drum and guitar...and Stevie singing so raw I love it. Oh, these were surfaced before the 2nd Tusk in 2004. Does any of this ring a bell? I would be so grateful. Jim |

As far as the Illume & Thrown Down demos - besides the widely circulated TISL era versions (Stevie w piano) & (Stevie w/keyboards, bass, percussion & backing vocals by Stevie herself) I don't think the "Pheonix 4" have leaked or have been circulated, if so, someone please share. We know these exist because we saw & heard with our own eyes on the Destiny Rules documentary. Stevie went to the SYW sessions in January 02' armed with 4 newly written songs & recorded demos: Illume, SYW, Destiny Rules & Silver Girl. She wrote and recorded these in Phoenix in Dec.01' I wouldn't be surprised if she recorded a new TD demo as well. ![]() |

"Sara" - Right now, I'm listening to an outtake (8:17 length) which features 100% completely different vocals by Stevie (and Sharon!) Clear and perfect, this is from Maureen's Mystery Box, which we had transferred from cassette to CD in 2005. There are tons of overdubs. BTW, Stevie never gives her Cleaning Lady speech on this version. This is the one where she sings, "You never showed me 'bout the fire..." Now, I'm listening to Maureen's Cleaning Lady "Sara" that she circulated in 1998, which is identical to the 2004 Tusk release. "Middle part torn out"? Yes, Maureen's has a few seconds missing around the 7:15 mark, but, otherwise, it's identical to the 2004 release (which is the same we had for decades, but in perfect quality). Now, there is a 10:49 version marked as "Remastered". However, it's really just the outtake version I mention above, with the alternate vocals by Stevie, with one of the verses edited in there twice to give the illusion of this being a longer "rare" version. Technically, it is, but why re-edit it and just copy a verse? (This is a fan-made re-edit from YouTube). Maureen also had a 7:07 version, which utilizes Stevie's album version vocals, but the music is mixed significantly in a different way. The ending vocals are up-front, not obscured in the mix. Some very different guitar work... This sounds like a raw mix that they crafted the album version from. "Storms".... Aside from the two Living Room demos (which were bootlegged on Almanac in November 1978), I have another shorter demo at 3:15. This is a pretty fast version. Drums, bass, keyboards and some guitar, with Stevie overdubbing herself a little near the end. This was from Maureen. On a 2-Inch 24 Track Master Reel is a piano/guitar demo of "Storms", mostly piano & Stevie, with the acoustic guitar coming and going. Stevie is very raw on this, absolutely beautiful! Then there are 3 outtakes of "Storms" from Tusk, which are ALL the same lead vocal from Stevie, but with extra overdubs and alternate mixing. One has very loud drumming, but the main Stevie vocal is the album vocal, with some extra vocals are the end, the "SAVE US! WE WERE FRAIL!" yelling vocals. One has really prominent organ in the mix. Maureen had these. Don't know if I helped at all. I do remember at least another outtake of "Gypsy" with different lead vocals by Stevie, and there is one outtake vocal that I have from Maureen, plus about 3 alternate mixes of the album version, but not the one outtake I remember. And one more "Sara", but I'm thinking it was shorter than even the album version, but an alternate vocal. I wish people would go through their Maureen CDs and cassettes. Or let me do it for them! ![]() Last edited by mikebise; 11-06-2011 at 11:37 AM.. Reason: "I should have known from the first, I'd be the broken-hearted..." |

Mike Bise, you should be hired by Stevie to do the liner notes of an album she should release with all our favorite demos. Your knowledge is unbelievable! I hope you are happy and doing well. BTW how is your mom doing today?

Mom is doing excellently, thank you! She's so glad she had the surgery now~ totally worth it. And I'm glad I got to help her through it.
I really should take the time to thank everyone here on The Ledge for helping me to piece together my Stevie audio after losing so much of it in 2006. Luckily, I still had all of my Master Reels CDs, but so many of the songs I lost are not from the Reels. It took me several years to re-amass everything I lost, but it really took off when I re-joined The Ledge in July 2009, and all the great people here helped me out. Thank you, all of Stevie's Ledgie Fans! Christopher, that's the best of the 3 existing vocal takes of "Jimmy, Come On Back". If only we'd gotten our hands on the Motherload... Oh well. |

Hey, I am long winded...and preachy. Not really...I just do it sometimes. So, not to offend any non Christians when I use the word God...its really interpreted as Good...whatever your source of love is...that is what you should always turn to... I hope I don't get heat if this offends someone...I am really just letting you guys try to know me a bit more...reaching out, you know? On another note...The Sara I like sounded just like the cleaning lady version except her ad libs for a minute were ripped out on every one I try...I have a billion dupes. Storms has a guys voice say...heya at the beginning...stevies vocals are loud and up front...and she has her own harmonies and adlibs mixed into the track at the end...we were frail...not all the prayers in the world...could save us...frail... Thank you...and again you guys...I hope you wont be angry. |
