I'm in the Bill Hicks state of mind, where he claims that all of the "taxed drugs" are legal, yet those that grow freely and can be grown by anybody are illegal. Because the government are earning nothing from them. There are far better drugs, and far better drugs for you, than alcohol (obviously not counting "medicinal") and cigarettes. I found it expressly amusing a few years ago when in the house of commons we had an openly alcoholic (He couldn't hide it, to be frank) MP, who obviously tipsy, gave a speech on the "horror of drugs" and the harsher punishments needed to deter drug users/dealers alike. He was like the poster boy for irony.
