@blackcat...you forgot Michael Grimm's powerhouse version of The (Small) Faces "Stay With Me", but you mention Roddie in your review.

I was ecstatic when Michael Grimm did this song. I've loved it ever since I saw The Rose. I think he's a great opener for Stevie. I've enjoyed everything he's performed.

Just got home from a long few days (PA to NJ to see Stevie on Thursday, day in NJ on Friday, DC on Saturday for Nationals baseball game & Lifehouse concert, home today!).
Quite a few posted about it, so I'll just add a few things... The concert was excellent! I was never at the PNC Bank Center and had no idea how it'd be, but I was surprised how nice it was. I had seats in 302, so definitely a bit back, but great view nonetheless! Also, the weather was gorgeous! Was really cool and not hot at all. A lot of people were really excited for Michael Grimm. I had never heard him before the show and I liked his set, esp. "Stay With Me"...wow! (...I will say I love Bette's version better though! lol). Towards the end of Michael's set the couple behind me were arguing with the couple a few seats down from them for talking and they were just going at it...yelling, "F*** you, Shut the * up..."....gotta love Jersey hahaAs soon as "Stand Back" started the place went nuts! Everyone was up on their feet, singing and dancing along. I loved the new songs live, although I didn't like that they sped up "For What It's Worth". "Annabel Lee" was the highlight for me, one of my favorites When Stevie introduced "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)", some guy behind me said "O geez, vampire? really?" LOLStevie's talking between songs was definitely entertaining and I really wish someone recorded the show or something, because it was pretty good. When someone yelled out "Sisters of The Moon" she said about she didn't know the lyrics even though she wrote it and (this is VERY similar to what she said) "One day, I'm just going to do a 4 or 5 hour show. We're going to have popcorn and chocolate. We're going to have umbrellas. I'll do a lecture and Q&A and pace back and forth (she walks away from mic and back), because that's what I do when I lecture, I pace"...OMG...it was HILARIOUS!! The "For What It's Worth" story about the boats, dust bunnies and wanting to own and live in the bus for the video ("well, not live but park it in my backyard or something"). Also, the "I don't want computers in my life" thing was entertaining when she was saying ".org, whatever that means". At the end of the night when she says "Love one another, be kind to one another" she added "and stay out of the flood!"...LOL Definitely was a fun night and I had a great time! I took my boyfriend with me and he's not a Stevie fan, but by the end of it, he said "I gotta admit, she's good, not great, but good. She knows how to put on a show"....and "You realize, she's crazy, right?" LOL. When Stevie would talk between songs, her would just look and me and bust up laughing lol. |

^ and just a side note...while driving all around Jersey Friday, came across a music/comic book store and stopped in...CDs were a bit pricey, DVDs were cheap. I was looking around and saw the "Say You Will" Tour Book for $15, so I had to get it
Today in DC, went to CD Cellar and they had the "Landslide" Maxi Single from "The Dance" era...omg...really not used to hearing remixes of "Landslide"! Definitely a bit of a novelty item for me and for $4, couldn't pass it up! |

Stevie Nicks smiled as she pressed a finger against the palm of her right hand. Then, still singing the wistful piano ballad “Love Is,” she pulled her hands apart, wiggled her fingers and brought them down toward the stage floor of the PNC Bank Arts Center.
The gesture suggested the fall of rain, the fearsome effects of entropy, leaves taken by the wind. Such is love, Nicks suggested — something ephemeral, something powerful, something to be cherished but never held for very long. Yet Nicks’ audience has been as devoted to her as any lover could be. On Thursday night, Nicks fans crowded into the seated area of the Holmdel amphitheater (lawn tickets were not sold) for two hours of fevered, passionate stories, delivered by a searcher who has always seemed privy to romantic secrets and in touch with the numinous. Many brought chiffon scarves — a Nicks trademark — and held them aloft; at least one middle-aged woman was accompanied by a child she’d named after Rhiannon, the Welsh witch-queen that Nicks sang about in her most famous song with Fleetwood Mac. Those fans made “In Your Dreams,” Nicks’ seventh solo album and her first in a decade, a Top 10 hit earlier this year, extending a commercial winning streak that dates back to the singer’s enlistment alongside then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham into Fleetwood Mac in 1975. With Buckingham and Nicks in the band, Fleetwood Mac, which had been making music since the mid-’60s, became the world’s most popular rock group. “Rumours,” the Mac’s indispensable 1977 release, has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and re-entered the Billboard Top 20 earlier this year when “Glee” devoted an episode to the disc. Nicks warned the PNC audience that her show would not be the sort of “greatest-hits” concert normally aired in amphitheaters in the summertime, which was only half-true: The pop singer has scored so many beloved radio standards that she’d have to be hard-hearted to deny her audience the pleasure of hearing them. She gamely performed the poetic “Landslide,” which, after three decades, remains a moving account of the difficult transition from carefree youth to heavy-hearted adulthood. Loud, semi-psychedelic renditions of “Gold Dust Woman” and solo hit “Edge of Seventeen” demonstrated that Nicks still has enough steel in her voice to sing hard rock. (Nicks made a few concessions to age on the old songs, shying away from the high notes on “Rhiannon, for instance. But her command of her refashioned melodies never sounded less than total, so it wasn’t a problem.) But a full half of the set was devoted to material from “In Your Dreams,” and while her enthusiasm never ebbed during the two-hour show, it was apparent that her heart belonged to her new compositions. Cut with producer Dave Stewart, “In Your Dreams” is a partial return to Nicks’ pop-rock sound of the 1970s — Mick Fleetwood even drums on the album. It also finds Nicks returning to many of her favorite themes: clandestine affairs, vampire chic (one song name-drops Anne Rice) and the mystic dimensions of ardor. “Annabel Lee,” which set the Edgar Allen Poe lyrical ballad to music, and “Secret Love,” the first single from “Dreams,” were performed in the steady-heartbeat style of Fleetwood Mac, and did not sound at all out of place next to “Rhiannon” and “Gold Dust Woman.” If it was Nicks’ intention to illustrate the connection between her recent writing and the songs that made her a superstar, this gutsy summer show was a personal success. Nicks mitigated against the risk of airing new material by adopting a relaxed, congenial attitude toward the crowd — telling stories, kidding around between songs, shaking hands of the people in the front row during “Edge of Seventeen,” and showering love and a few well-timed hugs on her bandmembers. Nicks brought her vocal coach onstage to sing Don Henley’s part on “Leather and Lace.“ “Soldier’s Angel,” a difficult, dirge-like song inspired by trips to Walter Reed Hospital, was accompanied by a warmly received plea to send money to injured veterans. During “For What it’s Worth,” Nicks was joined onstage by entertaining opening act Michael Grimm; with typical, likeable generosity, she called the young soul singer one of her favorite new artists. (He got a big hug, too.) Before launching into the song, Nicks told a long, rambling, immensely digressive story about shooting a video in a desert where sailors rode the dunes of a mirage on boats; it made no sense, but it was still kookily endearing. Stevie Nicks loves to talk, so it is a good thing she’s immensely likeable. At one point, she threatened to launch a tour that would allow her to play five-hour shows complete with a question and answer period, and she didn’t seem to be joking. These self-inflicted interruptions did halt the momentum of the concert, but the moment Nicks started singing, the show slipped right back into first gear. It has been a challenging conclusion to the summer for the Holmdel venue. Fans have been enthusiastic and hungry for music, but Mother Nature has not always cooperated. The skies opened on two of the most ambitious events of August — the electronic music Identity Festival was drenched by daylong rain, and the blues and barbecue celebration Rib Rock was knocked out flat by Hurricane Irene. Amphitheater shows are often designed to be musical comfort food; concerts where attendees know all the words to every song, and can sing along to each chorus as it comes. That’s fine, but PNC and LiveNation do want the Arts Center to be more than just an oldies arena. The Stevie Nicks concert, then, had to have been everything that the Holmdel amphitheater could have wanted: a show by a beloved figure who, at 63, still has plenty to say, and is still driven by a desire to create something fresh. http://www.nj.com/entertainment/musi...ent_holds.html |
