I thought this just meant that they don't call each other up and hang out beyond business ("we're not friends")...like co-workers who only see each other at work but should really go out and get a drink sometime.

But that's interesting. It suggests that either Lindsey would not want to call her (out of pride) or that he thinks that if he called it would not help the situation (as if Christine is mad at Lindsey). SO. It makes me wonder. Did Christine burn her bridges WITH LINDSEY?

I agree with your first point. LB always struck me as the third most articulate person in the classic Rumours FM line-up. Mick first, then Christine, then LB. 'Articulate' being a measure of clarity and precision of meaning, Stevie comes last, although John would be last on word-count alone.

LB either knows what 'burning bridges' means, in which case there's more to this situation than Chris simply saying 'I'm done, guys' and everyone else going 'Aw, bummer, but OK'. Or he doesn't know what it means, in which case he looks a bit silly, sitting there airily deploying idioms he doesn't understand.

I think Lindsey knows exactly what he's saying. I also thinks, in spite of the whole brouhaha over the making of Tusk vs. Rumours II, that he is absolutely guilty of running favorite phrases "into the ground." The painting, the big machine, little machine, yada, yada.

I also think he has a tendency toward passive-aggressive language. Saying something that seems like it could be more but he's only going to say so much and not spell it out, so we can sit there and wonder...

I think he should sit himself in a room and force himself to read every printed interview he's given in the last five years. I would HOPE he'd never reference some of the above again after that overload.

Agree on passive-aggression, and it always strikes me as odd in someone who bangs on about how emotionally 'sorted' he is nowadays.

As for the repetition, I think the fault lies with us for exposing ourselves to to every blessed thing these people say and do! I don't think we're meant to, really.

I know! Just like he repeats the same stories during his concerts assuming there are newbies there each time (which there are, I'm sure, but there are also us fanatics).
At one SYW concert, a friend of mine was repeating his speech, nearly word for word, for my enjoyment (Lindsey totally caught her doing this, btw and looked slightly sheepish). And, another time (during GoS), I think he just caught some of the same faces there for like the 10th time during the tour and I think he completely lost track of his canned speech. We threw him for a loop. Those are my favorite times;-)
But, yeah, I think he assumes this is a one-off thing. Not, "sheesh...there he goes again..."

Oh, I think he is doing something quite deliberate with "burned her bridges" too. He is sending a message, not necessarily a serious one, but it's a needling game with him and it's really to no purpose, since Christine could come back any time she wanted. I think he says certain things way after he's made his point, just to prove that he can keep saying them, to be annoying -- like with Sheryl Crow. I think he gets a certain amusement out of it.

Obviously, his bandmates don't read as many of his interviews as we do, but by this point they've certainly heard the "burned her bridges" comment once or twice and have said to him, "Lindsey! Why would you say that?" And, because he got a rise out of them, he likes to do it, because he can.

There's a naughtiness there.

The plot thickens!

I can only imagine the kind of drama that went on during The Dance.

Well, I have speculated about the rhyme. I have suggested: "1997 our love was like heaven." You can rhyme 1997 and 1998 as easily as you can 1999.

I think Lindsey is articulate enough, especially in normal conversation. He can be quick and witty off the cuff, so I don't know why he relies so heavily on canned phrases.

I just don't think he uses words that should not be in everyone's vocabulary. These words are not obscure, nor are they "big" or sophistocated. Sometimes he'll use terms of art, for instance his compartmentalize language is something he took from therapy. So, I can understand how the context of the word use isn't commonly known. But the words he uses are not complex. For instance, I'm not texting the word "organic" to anyone, but I would think it comes up in everyone's verbal conversation rather frequently.

TOTALLY agree on the passive-aggressive thing.

I would wager that as far as anyone else in the band is concerned, Christine could walk in the door anytime and be welcome no questions asked. Not sure the feeling was the same when Lindsey left.... Christine, Mick and John are unquestionably family (they've been together since the 60s!).

I recall reading an article on LB and Kristin describing how they lived in the Four Seasons for something like 2 years (not in his house on the hill) and then with the arrival of their second child he decided ok maybe this isn't the best lifestyle and began working on remodeling his house for his new family (you can see that in the SYW documentary). the article made some comment along the lines of "seeing his two kids schlepping through the lobby" made him realize he needed to do something about it.

First....can you imagine the COST of a suite at the Four Seasons for TWO EFFING YEARS?? Second.... who didn't want to live in the house? Kristen because of all the previous women who'd lived there? LB.. because he wanted to still think he was the single guy?

Yeah, the article said it was the sight of a very pregnant Kristen trudging through the lobby (and the high hotel bill) that forced Lindsey to put his house on the market and find a suitable home.

This reminds me of Kristen listing the Four Seasons as one of her favorite places. I guess she should know.

I've never had a normal conversation with him, so I don't know about that. He comes over in interviews (to me) to be a rather serious sort of cove, prone to straining for a lofty register that he believes his ideas require. They don't, though, not really, and I think I'd like him more if he just spoke about how joyous making music makes him feel, for I'm sure it does.

Having said all that, as with SN, he is very often hamstrung by having to respond to what he's been asked, so it's not entirely their fault if they repeat themselves.

Loz

PS -- Is anyone else sick to death of 'Buckingham Goes His Own Way' (and variants) as article titles??? I mean, would it kill someone to have an original thought??

And I think he's frequently easy and funny in interviews. I don't see him as always being serious at all. But I think he does use auto pilot too much and jumps in with those canned bits. Already the stuff he said for the first time at the Saban he's already said 10 times more, in the few interviews we've gotten since then.

I always chalked the "cue card responses" down to some kind of inert shyness on his part. When he's not behind his guitar when giving interviews and such, it almost looks to me like he has panic in his eyes. Like the guitar holds his confidence. I've noticed that a lot with musicians, where their instrument or microphone provides something to hide being when being themselves. But in interviews there's nothing but yourself and your opinions. That would freak me out too and I'd probable end up saying the same rehearsed comments repeatedly to avoid there being awkward "thinking time" silences.
